Architectural Description: 

Craftsman style home, deep eaves, stucco exterior, double gable roof dormer eave brackets, arched casement widows. Entrance porch doubled columned, intricate porch roof railing detail, symmetrical facade, centered second story bay window above entry and double square bays flanking main entrance. Side lights flank solid front door. Multi-pane over single pane casement windows throughout. Side porch on north facade. All original details

Historical Narrative: 

This property was purchased by Addison R. Saunders on December 15, 1911 who appears to have been a developer. Saunders owns the parcel for four years. On April 24, 1915 the property is deeded to Mary Jane Garth, wife of Hollan Garth of 245 Bruce Street in Lawrence, MA.

The 1920 Andover Valuation schedule lists Mrs Mary J. Garth Hidden Rd. - House $9000., Garage $300, 4.47 acres $5000. + total value $14,300.

Hollan Garth was born on Feb. 24, 1865 in Danholm, Yorkshire, England. Hollan was the second child of Samuel & Harriet Garth. They lived in Thornton, Yorkshire where his father worked a power loom as a weaver in a worsted wool mill. Hollan had four siblings; brother Alpha b. 1863, Leona b. 1867, Ellah b. 1869 and Cilla b. 1871. By 1881 his mother was a widow and all but the youngest held jobs in the mills.

Hollan immigrated to Boston in April 1883 and got work in the woolen mills in Lawrence. It was here that he met Mary Jane "Jennie" Morley b. 1867 in England, daughter of Jonathan & Frances Morley. Mary had immigrated in 1881 and was a Reeler in the mill. Hollan and Jennie married on September 14, 1889 in Lawrence. They did not have children.

Hollan became an overseer and later Superintendent of the mill. They moved to Andover in 1915 and remained in their new home on Hidden Rd. Jennie died in 1933 and her estate was handled by Fred E. Cheever, a local realtor. The deed was transferred to Hollan in December 1934. The 1940 Census has Hollan, widower, and his sister Ella (Garth) Holdsworth and neice Ruth Holdsworth, age 41 living with him.

Hollan sold the property to Bertha M. and George J. McCarthy on Jan. 24, 1941. Hollan died on February 10, 1945 in Winchester, MA.

George McCarthy was the Treasurer of the Merrimack Cooperative Bank in Lawrence. MaCarthys owned for 24 years then sold to Paul P. & Clair E. Gyrsting in Feb. 1965. They held just seven months then sold to Jorge H. & Dolores I. DeNapoli on September 30, 1965.

Jorge DeNapoli b. 1930 was a Medical Doctor, Dolores b. 1932 and sons J. Spencer b. 1959 and Allan b. 1961 list in the 1980 Directory: DeNapoli owned for 27 years.
