19 Dale Street

Historical Narrative:

This building was once part of the Ballard Vale Mills Co. complex and is listed on maps as the Storehouse A Building. The basement, first floor and attic space was used for wool storage. The second floor is listed as the wool sorting area.

The Ballard Vale Mills Co. sold their complex to Marshall I. Stone of Newton, MA on Feb. 21, 1928. The company held the mortgage loan. A default on the loan in 1943 forced a taking of the property and the mortgage deed was then sold to Helen A. Kendall, wife of Warren C. Kendall, of Washington DC. on Aug. 12, 1943. The property contain several mill buildings on 21.73 acres of land on both sides of the Shawsheen River.

In May of the following year Kendall then sold the complex to Wool Warehouse, INC. Edmund F. Leland, Jr. President. The deed map created on May 29, 1944 (map #1460) with 18.73 acres of land. The Town of Andover took about 2.5 acres for a sewer pumping station. Wool Warehouse Inc. owned the property for 17 years then sold off this building to P. W. Moody Co. on August 18, 1961. Richard A. Moody was the vice president of the company at the time of sale.

Moody owned a cotton batten company. They sold 11 years later on Aug. 18, 1961 to Putney Realty Trust, Kenneth P. Thompson and David B. White trustees. Ken Thompson was the owner of K. P. Thompson's stationary and office supplies store, "The Paper Store" to locals, on Main St. in Andover. They owned for seven years then selling to J. Kevin Callahan & Stanley H. Kotce on Oct. 30, 1979.

Kevin Callahan and Stan Kotce were partners and owners of Callahan & Kotce Refrigeration Co., Inc. They operated their business at this location until 1992 when the First National Bank F.S.B. took the property. The bank held for two years then sold to Mill Dale Realty Trust, Christine Zander trustee on July 13, 1992.

The building has been rehabbed and restored during their ownership which continues in 2016.
