249 Andover Street

Historical Narrative: 

The tow parcels of land number1 and 26 was purchased by widow Almira M. (Hogle) Shetler on June 18, 1902 for $75 and $40 respectively. Almira was born in 1825 in Canada, dau. of John & Eva (Schneider) Hogle. Almira married George E. Shetler b. 1821 in Vermont, a Wheelwright. They had five children; Herbert E. b. Apr. 21, 1847, Alice b. 1848, Katie Marie b. Nov. 18, 1850, Eva L. b. Dec. 17, 1852 all in High Gate Springs, VT. and John P. b. Aug. 26, 1859 in Methuen.
They relocated to Lawrence where George became a butcher and son Herbert first worked with him. In the 1870 Census both Alice and Katie were married and worked in a Millinery store. Alice's husband George W. Dow, age 29 was the owner of a Billard Saloon. Katie's spouse Charles Parker age 24 was a Clothing dealer. All the siblings lived with their parents. George Shelter died on May 26, 1900 in Methuen. The 1900 Census lists just Almira and her son Herbert at the home in Methuen.

Daughter Eva married on June 4, 1878 in Lawrence to Henry A. Beeley b. May 1856 in England and emigrated to America in 1862. Henry became a Master Mechanic and moved to Ballardvale to work for the Ballardvale Mills. In 1900 they are listed as living at 258 Andover St. Her mother Almira purchased the property and had the home built soon after. Almira, son Herbert and the Beeley's then shared the house. Herbert was a telegraph operator in Lawrence in 1870 and in the 1904 Andover directory is listed as a Gardener.

Almira Shetler died on Jan. 24, 1908 in Balladvale and was interred in the Shetler family lot at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Methuen. The property was inherited by the remaining children. Herbert is listed as retired by 1910 and he died on Sept. 18, 1911 in Concord, NH. The property was sold on Sept. 14, 1910 to William S. Clemons and his wife Katherine. Eva & Henry Beeley moved to Methuen.

William S. Clemons is listed as a Towerman for the Boston & Maine Railroad in the Andover Directories. The 1920 Valuation Schedule lists Wm. S. Clemons, South District, Andover St. Ballardvale, House $1400, henhouse $50, 1/8 acre lot 1 $100 and 1/16 acre lot 26 $50 = $1600.
