49 Essex Street

Historical Narrative:

The property at this end of Pearson St. and Essex St. was once owned by Eliphalet Pearson. Pearson's land in Andover was sold by Trustees of his estate, Ephraim Abbot and Stephen Gardner, to Joshua Ward of Salem, MA on Dec. 25, 1830 for $1267. Ward purchased five parcels along Pearson St. and Essex St. in house lot parcels from the estate. The deed was recorded on Feb. 26, 1835.

Lots #2 and #3 on Essex St. were in the first parcel and Lots #10 & #11 on the south side of Pearson St. were in of the third parcel on land. Joshua Ward began to sell off house lots on March 3, 1835. Ward sold lots 10 - 11 and 2 to Jeremiah Goldsmith Jr. and Stephen Lovejoy on May 3, 1835 for $175. Ward drew a map plan on the back of the deeds showing nine lots with the owners names. (see b. 260 leaf 144)

Goldsmith & Lovejoy then sold to George L. Abbot, Housewright, on Dec. 16, 1850 for $500. George Abbot built the cottage house at #34 Pearson St. to the rear of this property. He sold to William Abbot 2nd, Trader on Jan. 1, 1852 which included the cottage house and the lot which he then built the double house and store at 54 Essex St. William Abbot held the properties for eleven years then selling to Nathan B. Abbot on April 15, 1863 for $3500. Nathan B. then sold the cottage house parcel for $950 to William & Rose Higgins on Aug. 17, 1863. The parcel extended from Pearson St. to Essex St. and now #49.

The property was sold to George Stewart on June 7, 1889 and then the deed was transferred via Joseph A. Smart to Sarah A. Stewart on Nov. 29, 1892. George was b. Jan. 1825 in Scotland, son of George & Ellen (Urquhart) Stewart. He married in 1844 Sarah Ann Bushfield b. June 1828 in England, daughter of John & Elizabeth Bushfield. George and Sarah had three children. James, George, and Martha. George was a flax dresser and worked for Smith & Dove Manufacturing Co. Sarah A. died on Mar. 9, 1902 and George the following year on Dec. 10, 1903. This house does not appear on the 1882 Birds Eye map of Andover and is not listed in the 1900 Census. It was most likely built for Annie Marie McMillan after 1904.

This parcel remained as one lot until Annie Marie McMillan purchased the property in March 1904. Annie sold off the cottage house at 34 Pearson St. to David & Margaret Waldie on June 28, 1909 but retained this house #49 Essex St.. The lots were separated at that time.

Annie Marie McMillan was born May 21, 1853 in Andover, daughter of Alexander & Eliza (Campbell) McMillan. In the 1900 census she is a servant living at 119 So. Main St. at the Joseph A. & Martha A. Smart home. In the 1910 census she lives in her own home at 49 Essex St. and is the Proprietor of her own grocery store. Also living with her at that time were Mary Sheridan age 67 b. Ireland, Catherine Connors age 60 a Cook, b. Ireland and her sister Margaret Connors age 57, operative in the flax mill of Smith & Dove Manufacturing Co. Annie McMillan died on April 10, 1910 and is interred at St. Augustine's Cemetery. Her estate was sold to her tenant Catherine Connors on Dec. 28, 1910. Connors died three years later and her estate sold to Isabelle Callahan, wife of John on Nov. 7, 1913. John Callahan was deeded the property on Sept. 3, 1915.

At some point the house was converted into two apartments. The current owner removed the second front door and about 2010.
