1 Hartigan Court

Historical Narrative: 

Hartigan Court is actually a former section of the old Andover – Wilmington Railroad line to Haverhill 1838-1848. The Andover Depot was on Essex St. at the rear entrance section of Memorial Hall Library. The line crossed Main St. near the public safety center then connecting at High and Harding Streets. High St to North Andover center was the original railroad bed and converted into a roadway in the 1850’s. Boston & Maine Railroad purchased the line and moved the tracks to the current location in 1848 to bring service to the new city of Lawrence. The properties on Hartigan Ct. was acquired by Burnham White who lived at 66 High St. and pieced together several lots in the 1850s.

Hartigan Court was developed in 1903 by Justin E. Clark and Addie F. Eaton wife of James A. Eaton. The deeds refer to this as Clarks Court as does the 1906 map of Andover center and the 1910 census. In 1906 two houses are on the court, #1 labeled J.C. Clark and #5 labeled Sweeney (Mary & John).

David Hartigan first purchased the house at #1 from Clark on July 23, 1904. David would later acquire all four properties on the court. David was born in Oct. 1855 in Lawrence, son of Irish parents Michael & Maria Hartigan David was a finisher in the Wool mills. David married on April 16, 1885 to Mary Ann O’Brien b. Dec. 1855 in Scotland, dau. of James & Kate (Callahan) O’Brien. Daniel & Mary had three children Gertrude b. Jan. 1890 adopted, John Joseph b. Sept. 19, 1893 and Daniel Augustus b. Sept 7, 1894. They moved to Andover by 1900 and lived at #202 North Main St., later at #188.

The house at #1 Clarks Court was rental income and in 1908 was occupied by William & Isabella Gorrie, a brass finisher, and two sons James & Thomas who worked in Marland Mills. In 1913-1916 Scott T. Shattuck, an express man for Wright’s Express on Park St., his wife and son Ralph are renters.

In 1918 the house is rented to Carl G. Wetterburg and family who later purchased the home in 1945. It was their family home for 42 years. Carl Gottfred Wetterburg was born Oct. 1, 1865 in Velinge, Skavaborg, (Vastra Gotaland) Sverige –Sweden, son of Carl & Johanna (Svensdotter) Wetterburg. Known as Fred, he immigrated to NYC on Mar. 25, 1890. Fred worked as a coachman in Boston, married on Jan. 30, 1897 to Augusta W. Farsander b. April 1870 in Sweden, dau. of Petter & Christina Farsander. Augusta was a Laundress. They had three children; Jennie Roseline b. Sept. 1897, Elaine “Ellen” Christine b. Sept. 1899 and Carl G. b. Apr. 20, 1902. Fred came to Andover and worked for Smith & Dove Manf. Co. in 1900 and later for the Tyer Rubber Co.

David Hartigan would move next door to 5 Hartigan Ct. in 1916 after he purchased that home from Mary Sweeney. The sons; John J. was a physician and Daniel a pharmacist who owned Hartigan’s Pharmacy at 64 Main St. until 1978. David deeds the property to John J. in 1935 and died in 1937. John J. held the properties on the court until August 1945 when all the lots were sub-divided and sold off separately.

Wetterburg purchased the home on Aug. 7, 1945. His wife and daughter Jennie also held title. Jennie Roseline graduated from Punchard High School in 1916. She died on July 21, 1954 and his wife Augusta on October 20, 1959. Fred died in 1960. Daughter Ellen graduated PHS class of 1918. Son Carl A. Wetterburg sold the property to James & Sarah Payne on June 18, 1960. Payne rented the home to Capt. Carmen R. & Charlotte P. Martellini in 1961. Payne held for three years then sold to Louis V & Alice G. Dufresne on Mar. 29, 1963. They resided in the house three years then selling to Charles M. & Karen Keeler on May 27, 1966.

Philip J. & Catherine A. Bond purchased on June 30, 1992. Current owners of record are Charles David & Rebecca Joyner on Apr. 25, 2014.
