Historic Building Marker Program

historic markerThe historic marker program for houses in Andover began in 1990 as a way to visually recognize homes with historic significance and to encourage property owners to learn more about their houses. They also serve as a way to educate the public on how a date reflects a period of style in home construction. Plaques are issued by the Andover Preservation Commission through the Andover Historical Society Preservation Committee. Application forms can be obtained at the Andover Historical Society. The application should include the following:

  • A completed Massachusetts Historic Building Survey Form B
  • List of all former owners beginning with the most current
  • Deed research — book, page and date of each sale
  • Location of deed(s) at Lawrence and/or Salem registries
  • Copy of the earliest deed uncovered with book and page clearly marked
  • Brief paragraph on the families that have resided in the house
  • Historical significance of the house and associated structures (former tavern, doctor’s office, schoolhouse, barn, etc.)
  • List of resources that substantiate your research
