Historical Narrative:
Samuel & Jemima Holt had three sons, Jonathan b. Feb. 5, 1728, Samuel b. Dec. 18, 1730 and David b. Aug. 28, 1737. It appears that the sons inherited the property.
Jonathan Holt, wife Eleanor, and Samuel Holt, wife Abigail, sell this 20 acre property to their younger brother David Holt, a cooper, on April 25, 1792. The deed states "is the farm thereon he now dwells". David paid 53 pounds 6 shillings 8 pence for the property. David was born Aug. 28, 1737, married Hannah Martin b. April 11, 1738, daughter of John & Hannah (Steele) Martin. As mentioned in the deed, David was a Cooper and his shop was on the farm. Barrels were an important product as nearly all goods shipped and sold were packed in wooden barrels and tubs. "David Holt, Andover Mass, marched on 19 April 1775, Capt. Henry Abbott's Company, 'Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War, Vol 8', page 188 and 'Historical Sketches of Andover, MA', pub. 1880, pages 302 & 203."
David died on June 5, 1813 at age 75 years. His wife Hannah remained in a portion of the home as her right of dower. William Foster, wife Sarah W. , sold the property in on April 1, 1828 to John Harnden. John b. 1798 was married to Mary Holt. b. 1802 - d. 1859. The property came with dwelling house and 22 acres of land. The deed also contained the following: "except for the Cooper's shop which is to be moved off and the widow Hannah Holt's right of Dower, is likewise expected during her natural life." Hannah died on Aug. 1, 1831 and is interred at South Parish Cemetery. John Harnden would own the farm for 41 years. The 1850 Andover Valuation schedule lists John Harnden's, dwelling house $850, barn $250., 12 acres Front lot $480., 8 are pasture, 12 acre Tucker land $240. and farm stock $96.
Harnden sold the farm to Elizabeth B. Stinson, wife of James H. on Aug. 10, 1869 for $2400. Harnden died two years later in 1871. The deed included the line, "without interference from her husband James". When Elizabeth B. Stinson died her estate was handled by her Trustee John L. Smith through Probate Court on Mar. 12, 1888.
Alexander Dear bought the farm on March 13, 1896 and lived here, farming on 25 acres, until his death in 1912. Alexander was born in Scotland in 1844, emigrated to America in 1871 and for 20 years was a flax-dresser at the Smith and Dove Manufacturing Company in Andover. He lived in Abbott Village prior to moving here. Agnes Dear his wife inherited the property and then sold to Alice B. Dove, wife of W. Percival Dove grandson of John Dove of the Smith & Dove Manufacturing Co. The Doves had purchased the Whipple estate at 290 South Main which land abutted the Dear property.
In 1915 Alice Dove sold this home and parcel to Rose E. Bullock, wife of Hugh, who was Superintendent of Tyre Rubber Co. Bullock owned for 30 years then selling to Warren S. & Marjarete B. Thomas on Dec. 15, 1945. Thomas owned just three years then sold to F. Howard & Marjorie Porter on Jan. 19, 1948. Porter held for two years.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Onthank bought on Jan. 28, 1950 and restored the home. They added additional parcels to the property in 1955. In 1950s they had the chimney and fireplace redone with old bricks by Homer Brousseau. Mrs. Onthink was an artist and did original stencil work on the interior walls. 1951 directory - Onthank, Elmer and Ruth, furniture contractor and housewife, 1960 directory - Onthank, Elmer and Ruth and Robert, age 21, student.
