15 Cuba Street

Simplified Queen Ann style home.

Historical Narrative: 

This property was once part of 17 Cuba Street, the Isaac Howarth property and estate. The estate went to the Howarth daughter’s Isabella Sarah Howarth and Ann Howarth. Isabella married Samuel Anderson and Ann married James Crooper.

Samuel Anderson was born July 21, 1816 in Ballymoney, Co. Antrim, Ireland, son of James and Hanna Anderson. Sam was a Carder in the “Howarth Mill”, the stone mill in Abbott Village later owned by Smith & Dove Manf. Co. Samuel married on Sept. 25, 1842 to Isabella Howarth born Sept. 8, 1816, dau. of Isaac & Ann (Holt) Howarth. They lived at 17 Cuba St. and had nine children, seven survived to adulthood; James J. b. May 8, 1844 in VT, Ann L. b. May 5, 1845, Jane b. June 1847- d. July 2, 1847, Isabella Sarah b. Oct. 3, 1848, Ellen E. b. 1852, Samuel W. b. Nov. 16, 1853 d. Sept. 22, 1854, John Samuel b. Oct. 22, 1856, Laura Jane b. 1858, and Lucinda Mary b. 1862.

Son John Samuel Anderson b. Oct. 22, 1856, became a blacksmith and apprenticed with John Faulkner. He later formed a partnership with Charles Bowman in the firm Anderson & Bowman.
AA May 20, 1887 AA p2 – “Two young men known in Andover, John Anderson and Charles Bowman, have formed a partnership, and purchased the blacksmith business and good will of James H. Cochrane, who has done business for many years on Punchard Avenue (#5). They are both competent workmen, the former has been employed both by Mr. John Faulkner, and later by Mr. Harriman; the junior member served his apprenticeship under Mr. Cochrane.”
“ANDERSON & BOWMAN” - Successors to James H. Cochrane – Blacksmithing, Horse Shoeing and Jobbing done with promptness and dispatch. Particular attention paid to the treatment of interfering and over-reaching horses. Punchard Ave. Andover Mass.”

AT May 4, 1888 “Anderson & Bowman have already out-grown the accommodations of their shop on Punchard Ave. and this week has moved into the old stand of A. R. Frame on Park St. Here they have increased faculties not only for their shoeing, but for general jobbing and carriage work.” Their shop was located at 39 Park Street.

John married on Sept. 19, 1881, at Christ Episcopal Church to Mary Ann “Annie” McIntosh b. Nov. 1857, dau. of John & Mary (Smith) McIntosh. They had three children; John Faulkner b. Aug. 9, 1882, Mima Howarth b. Mar. 24, 1884, and Burtt McIntosh b. Feb. 10, 1886.

June 4, 1897, p1 - Andover Townsman – John Anderson of the firm Anderson & Bowman, will erect a house for himself on Cuba St. Hardy & Cole have the contract to build it.
The house lot was owned by his mother Isabella Anderson and part of 17 Cuba St. at that time. Isabella died on Oct. 1, 1898 at age 82 of senility. The property went to the Anderson heirs and this deed was placed with his brother-in-law John P. Wakefield who married John’s sister Isabella Sarah Anderson who lived at 17 Cuba Street. The property deed was transferred to Mary Ann Anderson on April 28, 1906.

Their son John Faulkner Anderson died on Sept. 22, 1903, age 21 of cerebral congestion. He was employed at Smith & Dave as a Flax dresser. Daughter Mima Howarth Anderson was a spinner at Smith & Dove and married William G. Mitchell. Son Burtt McIntosh Anderson worked for J. P. Steven’s Co. as a steamfitter and married Florence May Wood.
John S. Anderson purchased the duplex home at 79-81 Chestnut St. on Sept. 23, 1912, moved there. The Cuba Street property was sold to Joseph J. & Mabel McCarthy on Dec. 5, 1913. The entire Anderson family occupied the new home with John & Mary living with daughter Mima & William Mitchell in #79 and their son Burt occupied #81.

With the transition from horse and carriage to gas powered automobiles and trucks the blacksmith trade declined. The firm of Anderson & Bowman retired on January 1, 1927. Mary Ann died in 1931. John S. Anderson died on June 21, 1940, at age 82 years. They are interred at Christ Church Cemetery.
