17 Lowell Street

Architectural Description:

Colonial Revival 1938 -

Historical Narrative:

This property was once part of the seven acre parcel that belonged to the Joseph Faulkner homestead at 9 Lowell St. The property was sold to William M. Wood, president of the American Woolen Co. in 1914. The land was later divided into separate house lots when Wood began construction of Shawsheen Village after WW I. This parcel remained vacant during that period but was part of the properties included in Wood's Arden Trust for his children. After the death of William M. Wood on Feb. 2, 1926, his son Cornelius A. Wood, trustee of Arden Trust, deeded the properties to the Phillips Corporation of Maine for liquidation.

This lot was first purchased by Josephine H. Kress, wife of Edward F. Kress on Aug. 16, 1926. Kress held the property for eight years then sold to Angelo & Raffaela Grieco on June 8, 1934. Grieco held two lots #15 & #17 Lowell St. (Lots 4 & 5 on Map #646) Lot #4 was sold to Ulisse & Anna DeRosa on Sept. 22, 1936. Lot number 5 at 17 Lowell St was then sold to Frank J. & Susan P. Leone on Mar. 4, 1937. The house was then built by the Leone family.

Leone sold three years later to Frances S. Miller and Helen J. Smith on Oct. 2, 1940. Helen Smith died on Nov. 8, 1954 and the property was inherited by sole heir Frances S. Miller. The house deed was later placed in both Frances and husband Norman Miller names on Sept. 15, 1964. Millers sold to Hosmer in 1976.
