Architectural Description:
There has been a house on this site since 1797, and a portion of this home may be from that period. The house most likely has been added to and altered through the years of ownership. It was built during the Federal Period.
Historical Narrative:
19 Haggett's Pond Rd. - Osgood – Abbot - Stickney House - 1.49 acres
Joshua Osgood held a deed of David Wood of Charlestown and sold this “2¾ acre lot adjoining the south side of Haggett's Pond” to Esther Osgood, wife of his brother Aaron, on April 30, 1796. Esther paid $60 which included a house on the property. Esther Wardwell was b. Nov. 28, 1774, dau. Daniel & Damaris, and married on Feb. 26, 1795, to Aaron Osgood b. Oct. 11, 1760, son of Joshua & Mary Osgood. Charlotte H. Abbot’s Osgood Genealogy states, “Known as “Aaron of the club foot”, had a store, married Esther when her husband Zachariah Frye deserted her, lived later in Ballardvale. W. Stickney house occupied by his widow in 1864 was built by her husband for Aaron Osgood on the site of Eph. Corey’s place.” Osgood held the property for 13 years then selling in 1809 to Zebadiah & Sarah (Farrington) Abbot for $272.
Zebadiah, a Trader, & Sarah married on Oct. 18, 1796, owned for 17 years, and had six children: Sally b. 2/24/1798, Ann b. 5/18/1801, Zebadiah b. 5/20/1805 d. 10/7/1808, Jeremiah b. Jan. 9, 1807-8, Zebadiah b. 4/10/1810 and Edward F. b. 12/24/1816. It appears from the deeds that Zebadiah built the barn. They sold to Herman & Lydia (Farrington) Abbot on July 1, 1826 who owned just two years then sold to John Flint on Dec. 15, 1828.
John Flint Jr. who married Lydia Clark Abbot lived 2 Elm St., their home facing Elm Sq. John Flint Jr. was a cabinet maker and carpenter in his early life and invested in real estate. He held for two years then sold to William Stickney.
William Stickney purchased this property from Flint on April 17, 1830. William was born March 9, 1793, in Andover, son of Abraham & Abigail (Bell) Stickney. William was the 6th child of eleven children. He became a Wheelwright and had a shop on the property. William married Eliza Ricker of Lowell, on Jan. 12, 1843. Eliza was born in 1793 in Somersworth, NH near Dover, daughter of Ebenezer Ricker. William & Eliza did not have children. His mother Abigail lived with them in 1850 census. She was 92 years of age and died later that year on August 20th. 1850 Valuation - William Stickney; House 7 Shed $375, 2 acre house lot $50 = $425 - Farm Stock $24.
William died of consumption on April 8, 1854, and is interred in West Parish Garden Cemetery. His youngest sibling Naomi, b. Oct. 27, 1805, moved into the home with Eliza as did his brother Benjamin b. Oct. 10, 1779, in Tewksbury. All three would live out their remaining years here. Benjamin died on May 20, 1856, age 76.
Eliza Stickney died of paralysis at age 75 on May 29, 1868. Horatio Barnard was the administrator of her estate. Her debts equaled more than the worth of the estate and the property and household goods were sold at auction on Jan. 2, 1869. The auction, advertised in the Andover Advertiser in Dec. 1868, listed the property as about 2 acres, with a one and a half story dwelling house, barn, shed and shop in West Parish near the Haggett's Pond Station. Naomi Stickney was the highest bidder at $390 for the house and property. Naomi lived another 17 years passing on May 12, 1886, at age 80y 7m.
The property was later sold to James M. Carrier on Mar. 11, 1891, who then sold to Thomas Dixon for $550. Thomas was born in Norfolk Co., England on Feb. 16, 1839, and married in Lawrence on June 25, 1863, to Mary Wilson Greenwood b. 1829 in England. There is an Elizabeth b. 1851 in England, listed as a daughter but I believe this may have been the sister of Thomas. They had five children born in Massachusetts: John b. 1861, Henry Robert b. 1863, Allen b. Jan. 4, 1865, Sarah b. Nov. 16, 1867, and Alice b. Sept. 17, 1870, in Lawrence.
Thomas was in liquor sales in the city, and his two older sons were bar tenders in the 1880 census. Thomas had purchased the corner lot on the north side of Lowell St. on Dec. 30, 1882, for $6000. This is the parcel that Baron’s Country Store is located at 429 Lowell Street. In the 1885 Andover directory Thomas is the Proprietor of "Bellevue Grove", with son Allen bookkeeper and John C. Dixon Manager. The Grove commanded a view of Haggett's Pond, a popular summer picnic ground east of the house and convenient to train service with Haggett's Pond Station a short walk away. Thomas’ wife Mary died on Aug. 2, 1889, in Lawrence. The 1893 directory list Thomas and his son Allen living in the home. The 1900 census has Thomas Dixon as the Grove Manager. A widow Alice Hatton b. May 1844 in England is a servant and boarder Richard Briesly age 34 a farm laborer. Sadly his son Allen died on Oct. 20, 1909, of a heart attack, near the crossroads, due in part to “over stimulation of alcohol.” Thomas then sold the property to James Greenwood on Dec. 17, 1909, moved to Lowell to live with his daughter Sarah Morse and her family. Thomas died on Dec. 17, 1912, at age 73 years 10 months and is interred at West Parish Cemetery.
James Greenwood was a Lawrence resident, b. in England and had a furniture business. It appears that this was investment property with a mortgage held by Annie McCarthy. Greenwood died in 1913, and the estate was administered by his sons William & Joseph. They sold to Mary E. Barron on Aug. 30, 1915.
Mary E. Barron was the wife of William F. Barron. Mary Ellen Magdalen Kerr b. 1878 in NY, dau. of Hugh & Ellen (Flanagan) Kerr. Mary was a treasurer in Lawrence when she married on April 27, 1904, to William Forbes Barron b. Apr. 29, 1879, in Woodride, Aberdeen, Scotland, son of Thomas & Jessie (Forbes) Baron. William immigrated in Oct. 1886. William was a manager of Theatrical Company in Manchester, NH when he married, but then a bookkeeper, and later a foreman at the Pacific Mill in Lawrence. The WWI registration card notes the loss of his left arm. William however continued working in the mill in the shipping department. Mary & William had four children: Helen Jessie b. 1904, William F. b. 1908, Thomas C. b. 1910 and Mabel I. b. Mar. 1912.
The 1920 Valuation of the property lists Mary E. Barron; Haggett's Pond Rd. House & shed, Dixon, $600, 2 acres $150, 1 acre $50, 28 acres $500 = $1300. The one acre parcel is the Barron’s County Store lot on Lowell St. and the 28-acre parcel was on the west side of Haggett’s Pond Rd running along Bellevue Rd.
Mary died on Sept. 18, 1932, and is interred at Spring Grove Cemetery. In 1932 William is listed as a shipper and proprietor of the "Twin Oaks Filling Station" which would become Barron’s Country Store.
William F. Barron died on Jan. 2, 1951, and his children inherit the properties. The house and store remain in the family ownership in 2021.
