Historical Narrative:
This house was built for William & Mary Agnes Shaw in 1896. The deed to the property was placed in Mary Agnes Shaw name.
Andover Townsman (AT) 2/7/1896 p. 5 BV William Shaw has purchased a lot of land on the Plains and will build a house on it in the spring.
AT – Mar. 27, 1896, p.1 – Hardy & Cole are to build the new house for William Shaw at Ballardvale. John McCarthy will put in the foundation.
William Shaw was born on Feb. 14, 1860, in Andover, son of George & Sarah (Stocks) Shaw. His father, born in England, worked in the J. P. Bradlee Mills. George & Sarah had six children: Benjamin b. 1847, Joseph Edwin b. Dec. 11, 1849, Charles Henry b. Feb. 23, 1852, George E. Jr. b. William b. 1860, and David. Son William first worked in the mills, was a member of the Union Congregational Church in Ballardvale and began to work for the Christian Endeavor Society and advanced to Treasure of the U.S. Christian Endeavor Society.
William married on Jan. 18, 1892, to Mary Agnes Holmes b. Mar. 22, 1860, in Andover, dau. of James & Mary (Morrison) Holmes. They did not have children. The 1900 Census lists William & Mary and also includes William’s brother George age 42, his widowed mother Sarah, age 77, and sister-in-law Nellie H. Holmes age 50. A servant, wid. Gertrude S. Nickerson age 30 b. in Canada.
AT April 3, 1896, p. 5 Ballardvale. - William Shaw left town last Monday on an extended trip in the interest of the Christian Endeavor Society. He expects to address twenty-nine meetings and conventions before his return. Among the conventions that he will speak at are the ones held at Chicago, Topeka, Kansas City, St Louis, Tacoma, Oregon City, Denver, Sacramento, and San Francisco. Mr. Shaw will not arrive home until May 9th.
5/15/1896 p. 5 BV - William Shaw returned Saturday from his trip through the West in the interests of the Christian Endeavor Society having traveled about 10,000 miles.
His wife Mary Agnes was a frail woman, and her heath prevented her from traveling. She spent most of her time at home but supported the church and community programs and events. Mary died at age 52 on June 22, 1912, and is interred at Spring Grove Cemetery.
William Shaw remarried on June 3, 1914, in Boston to Maude Chamberlin born in Coventry, VT, dau. of James W. & Ella (Thrasher) Chamberlin. William was also involved in publishing religious books and pamphlets. William sold the house in Ballardvale to William D. McIntyre, wife Edna B. on May 5, 1922, and moved to Boston. His obituary in the Andover Townsman on Dec. 11, 1941:
"William Shaw - Dead at his home in Santa Monica, Calif., last Thursday morning, was a native of Ballardvale who, in his 71 years, had become one of the outstanding leaders of the Christian Endeavor Society. William Shaw was born in the Vale in 1860, and, after being educated in the local public schools, worked for some time in the then- flourishing Ballardvale mills. Always interested in the Christian Endeavor movement in the Ballardvale Congregational church, he became associated with its national office in 1883, and served as its treasurer till 1886, when he was promoted to the post of general secretary. At one time, more than forty years ago, he served as Ballardvale correspondent with the Townsman. He authored several Christian Endeavor hymn books and pamphlets dealing with the work of the society, and helped found the summer conference series at Sagamore, Mass. In 1915, he was a candidate for governor of Massachusetts, representing the Prohibition party. He was also a trustee of the Atlanta Theological Seminary and the Gordon Bible College. Occidental College awarded him an honorary LL.D. degree for his Christian Endeavor achievements. His first wife, the former Mary Agnes Holmes of Ballardvale, died in 1912. He is survived by his present wife, Maude (Chamberlain) Shaw, by a brother, George, of Los Angeles, a niece, Mrs. Eldon E. Fleury of Melrose; and two nephews, J. Edwin Shaw of Melrose Highlands, and Irving R. Shaw of Ballardvale. Funeral services were held from the late home last Thursday after noon, and interment was in Santa Monica.”
(William Shaw was later interred in the Shaw family lot at Spring Grove Cemetery) Maude died on Aug. 30, 1964, at age 90.
McIntyre ownership:
William Daniel McIntyre was born May 8, 1889, in Ballardvale, son and forth child of John & Agnes (Buchan) McIntyre. His parents were Scottish immigrants who came to Andover in 1880. His father was a Twister in the Ballardvale Mills and later a weaver. Bill first went to work as a spinner in the mill in 1910 but would later become paymaster at the Ayer Mill in Lawrence, of the American Woolen Co. In 1917 Bill purchased his first home at 23 Tewksbury St and his parents moved in with him. In 1920 Bill purchased a few lots off Andover St. and High Vale St. In 1922 he purchased the Shaw house at 229 Andover St. Bill, single at that time, moved his parents up to Andover St. Bill’s mother Agnes died on Sept. 10,1926.
The 1930 Census enumerated Bill, his father John and Bill’s sister Alice G. 48, and her husband Irving R. Shaw 50, an operator in the mill, with their children Gardner R. and Doris A. also residing with them and a Martha A. Shaw, age 72, Irving’s widowed mother. John McIntyre died on June 25, 1935.
While working at the Ayer Mill his met Edna Bertha Bachmann, a stenographer. Edna was b. Sept. 9, 1904, in Lawrence, MA, dau. of Albin & Bertha (Wiesner) Bachman. They married in 1936. Bill and Edna had two sons: William Daniel Jr. b. 1939 and John b. 1943. Bill was active in the community serving as chairman of the Board of Public Works and was a trustee at Spring Grove Cemetery and the Andover Home for Aged. He was a member of the BallardVale United Church and a member of the Andover Masons St. Mathews Lodge, including Past Master and 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner. Bill died on July 12, 1963.
Edna remained in their home. She was an active member of the BallardVale United Church for over 60 years. Coordinated mailing out the church newsletter, wrote thank-you notes for all donations to the Memorial Fund and was a member of the Women’s Church Guild. Edna was also a life member of the Eastern Star and part of a group called the “True Blue Girls. Edna sold the house on Sept. 28, 1998, to James W. & Julie McLeod. The McIntyres owned the property for 76 years. Edna died on Dec. 11, 2001, at age 97 in North Andover and was the oldest member of her church.
