Historical Narrative: 

24 Maple Ave – (formerly #14) - 38-146 – 0.233 acre, 10,143 sq. ft. This home was built between 1879-1882 as it appears in the 1882 Birdseye map of Andover Center. The property was originally number 14. The street was renumbered in 1928 and became #24 Maple Ave.

Maple Ave. was once a 17 acre parcel of land that was owned by Samuel G. Valpey who purchased the home at 60 Elm Street for $6600 on Feb. 17, 1855. The Maple Ave parcel of 17 acres 26 rods was purchased at auction by John H. Flint for $858.12 on June 16, 1866. Andover Advertiser (AA) Oct. 23, 1874 – John H. Flint is at work on a new avenue leading through his land from Elm Street to Carmel lane. AA - July 23, 1875 - Maple St. opened; description of 1st house, a brick one on Flint's land.

This property was purchased by Rebecca Merrill Wilbur, wife of Rev. Henry R. on July 15, 1878 for $1200. The property was then transferred to her husband via Susan M. Wilbur on the same day. Wilbur family built several income properties on High St., Maple Ave. & Court. Rev. Henry R. Wilbur died on May 29, 1898 and Rebecca and children were the estate heirs.

The property with dwelling was sold on Sept. 30, 1905 to Mary (Cronin) Sullivan, wife of Timothy C. Sullivan. The Sullivan family lived at 49 Red Spring Rd. and had thirteen children. Their oldest son Daniel Vincent Sullivan born July 9, 1879 and his bride Ellen “Nellie” Collins b. 1873 in Ireland, daughter of Charles & Mary (Fineck) Collins would reside here. Daniel & Nellie married on Nov. 15, 1905 in Salem, MA. Daniel was a Coachman and Chauffeur for Professor Charles H. Forbes, of Phillips Academy who lived at 5 Porter Rd.

Daniel & Nellie did not have children. They were deeded the property from his mother Mary on Nov. 29, 1929. His mother Mary died in 1931. Nellie died in 1936 and is interred at St. Augustine’s Cemetery. Daniel would remarry to Anna Elizabeth Scanlon b. 1888 in Northern Ireland and the deed was placed in her name on July 18, 1938. The property remained in the Sullivan family for 50 years. It was sold after the death of Anna in 1954 to Arthur W. Hutton on June 30, 1955.
