Architectural Description:
Bungalow Craftsman style home.
Historical Narrative:
This property was once part of a larger parcel of land purchased by Ernest J. & Eva Beaulieu and Edward J. & Delrina Beaulieu on October 14, 1913. The Beaulieus sold off a few parcels during their ownership. Lemay acquired the abutting 2.22 acre parcel north of the White/Simpson lot from the Beaulieu's on June 12, 1943. That parcel contained a 1½ story wood dwelling house which was sited behind the Beaulieu house at #250R Andover St.
Maps show two houses to the rear of the lots, set far back off Andover St. The Beaulieu house is now 250 R. Andover St. Their second home built in 1902 as listed at the assessor’s office, was then occupied by the Lamay family as the 1943 town directory lists the Lamay family home as off Andover St.
Elphege Emile Lamay was born on May 28, 1900, in Amesbury, MA son of Alfred and Eugenie (Bonevert) Lamay. His father was a machinist at an automobile factory. Elphege became a shoemaker and wood heel maker and at age 18 worked for H.C. Rowe in Newburyport. He married on March 31, 1919, in Amesbury to Emma Delima Perrault b. Aug. 9, 1901, in Lowell, MA dau. of Joseph & Eugenia (Therien) Perrault. They first lived in Salisbury, then Amesbury before moving to Lynn, MA where he worked for Sarra & Sandler Shoe Co. Elphege & Emma had eight children: Alice b. 1921, Rita. M. b. 1923, Alfred J. b. 1926, Antoinette, M. b. 1928, Wilfred b. 1929, Norman b. 1932, and Elsie M. b. 1935.
The Lamays had a $1700 mortgage with the Andover Savings Bank in 1943 which was paid off on May 3, 1945. They then purchased the White/Simpson lot which Ruth E. White had purchased on April 23, 1945. Ruth then sold to Elphege E. & Emma D. Lemay on May 1, 1945.
Lamay then took a mortgage of $2500 on the two parcels with the ASB on May 1, 1945, and paid off the following year on May 4, 1946. The 1947 directory lists the house at #347 Andover St. As house lots were sold along Andover St. the street numbers were changed and in 1958 the entire town was re-surveyed. Most houses further out from the town center were given new numbers reflected in the 1959 directories. As deeds follow land transfers and not house moving, it is apparent that this house was moved to front on Andover St. by the Lemays about 1945-46
The Lamays owned the property and house for seven years then selling both properties on Feb. 14, 1950. The Lamay family moved to Marin Co. California and worked on a Chicken Ranch or poultry farm owned by Watson J. & Cora Kline.
Isabel M. (Mills) Brouck purchased the property on Feb. 14, 1950, and the deed states with buildings. Isabel Mae Mills was b. May 25, 1921, in Ballardvale, dau. of Robert & Jessie Ann (Robertson) Mills. He parents were Scottish, and they lived on Oak St. in Ballardvale. Isabel graduated from Punchard High School in 1940 and married in 1943 in Lawrence, MA to Henry John Brouck b. Nov. 6, 1921, in Lawrence. Henry’s parents, Desire Joseph & Ernestine (Hecart) Brouck were born in France. Henry was a machinist working for Hamblett’s Machine Shop in Lawrence. Henry served during WWII and was discharged on Jan. 8, 1946. They lived in Lawrence then rented in Ballardvale at 19 Oak St. and 8 Tewksbury St. prior to the purchase of the property. Henry & Isabel had two children: Donald Henry b. 1945 AHS 1963 and Sandra b. 1950 AHS 1968.
In April 1961 Henry Brouck sub-divided the former two parcels into three separate lots creating lots #252, #256 (the Brouck home lot) and #260 Andover St. #252 and #260 where then sold off.
Isabel Brouck transferred the deed over to her husband Henry J. Brouck on June 7, 1996. Henry died on October 3, 2010 and is interred at Spring Grove Cemetery. His estate was administered by his children Executors, Donald Brouck and Sandra Berkowitz. The property was sold to Mark Silvstro on Feb. 23, 2012. Brouck family had owned the home for 67 years. Isabel died on Sept. 6, 2017.
