Architectural Description: 

Tudor Revival - The first home built on the site was a small Tudor Revival cottage, a popular style in the 1920s and 1930’s. This house is very similar in style at 13 Florence St. which embraced a more Craftsman element in its design. Both were built in 1933.

Historical Narrative: 

The home originally built on this lot was razed in 1994 for the construction of the current home. This parcel contains four separate lots of #5, #6, #21 and #22 pieced together over the years. The lots were laid out in 1890 and were about 65' x 100' in dimension or 6500 sq. ft. The first home built on the site was a small Tudor Revival cottage, a popular style in the 1920s.

Edwin Walter Brown was born on April 7, 1888, in Ballardvale, son of Edwin & Prudence (Fallows) Brown. His parents lived on Center St. Edwin attended Bradlee School and became a stenographer and clerk. He married on Aug. 26, 1916, in Everett, MA to Mildred Elizabath Nickerson b. July 7, 1891, in Baccaro, Shelburne, Nova Scotia, dau. of Samuel H. 7 Adra Jane (Chetwynd) Nickerson. Her parents immigrated in 1898 to Everett, MA. The WWI registration card lists Edwin working for the Van Tassel Tanning Co. in Stratham, MA. They lived in Ballardvale and rented homes on Center and Tewksbury Streets before purchasing this lot on Andover St. on Aug. 16, 1933. The Browns built the house and resided here the remainder of their lives. Edwin would later work of Wood Mills in Lawrence and a clerk and bookkeeper.

Edwin and Mildred had three sons: Edwin Roy b. Aug. 13, 1917, Philip Byron b. Jan. 24, 1927, and Carlton Nickerson b. Jan. 1, 1936. Edwin Roy became a foreman at Tyer Rubber Co and P. Byron was assistant manager of the A& P in Andover. Carlton graduated from Punchard High in 1954.

The 1950 Census lists Edwin working at Wood Mill and wife Mildred as school transportation for the public schools. Carlton was age 14.
Edwin died on Feb. 17, 1967, in Lawrence and is interred at Spring Grove Cemetery. Mildred remained in their home until the late 1970’s. The house was sold to Wendy L. McGowen on June 11, 1982. Mildred died in Acton, MA in March 1895 at age 95 years.

Obit. AT - Feb. 23, 1967, Edwin W. Brown, 259 Andover St., died Feb. 17 at Lawrence General Hospital following a long illness. He was 78. A native and lifetime resident r of Ballardvale, Mr. Brown served as correspondent for the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune in that part of Andover for 48 years. Until his retirement, he was employed as a clerk in the Wood Mill. He was a graduate of Cannon’s Commercial College, Lawrence, the East Greenwich Rhode Island Academy and Burdett College of Boston. Surviving are his wife, Mildred E. (Nickerson) Brown; three sons, Carl N. of Arlington, P. Byron of Lexington and Edwin R. of North Andover; two brothers, George of Andover and John of Amesbury; also six grandchildren. The funeral was held Monday at Lundgren Funeral Home. Burial Spring Grove Cemetery.

AT Obit - Mar. 30, 1995 - Mildred E. Brown Lived in the Vale for 78 years Mildred E. Brown, 95, of Acton died at Suburban Manor Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Mrs. Brown was born in Baccaro, Nova Scotia, Canada. She was raised and educated in Everett and Arlington. She had lived in Ballardvale for 78 years and was a longtime member of Ballardvale United Methodist Church. Mrs. Brown transported special needs children to school for the town of Andover. She was a secretary for Dr. Lane of Andover and wrote a column for the Andover Townsman. She was past president of the Mother’s Club. She summered in York Beach, Maine for many years.
Members of her family include her sons, Carlton N. Brown of York Beach, Maine, P. Byron Brown of Sarasota, Fla., and Roy Brown of North Andover; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was the wife of Edwin W. Brown who died in 1967. A funeral service will be held Tues day, April 4, at 11 a.m. at Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home, 33 Pearson St. Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Ballardvale United Methodist Church Fund.

Wendy L. McGowen owned the home for eight years then selling to Walter T. & Janice E. Chernicki on Apr. 13, 1990. They owned four years then sold to G. E. Capital Asset Management Corp. on May 2, 1994. They house was razed in 1994 and the current home was built by Douglas Ahern who sold to Steven M. & Joan M. Jennings on June 2, 1995
