27-39 Main Street - Andover Savings Bank Retail and Office Building
Phase One built 1975 – Phase Two 1982

ASB Development Corporation, owned subsidiary of the then Andover Savings Bank, announced plans in 1975 for construction of an office and retail building on the property they had acquired at this location. This site formerly contained three separate parcels of land with retail and apartment buildings on each lot. The Barnard Building at 27-29-31 circa 1820, the Draper Building at 33-35-37 circa 1820 and the Pettingill-Swift Building at 41-43 circa 1840. The Draper Building was razed in August 1957 and the lot remained empty. The Pettingill-Swift Building was built as a retail building for two shops and is remembered by many women in town as Michael Jays dress shop (1940’s-1960’s). The store was gutted by fire on January 9, 1975 and Colpitt’s Travel Agency and the Personal Touch gift shop were forced to relocate. The Barnard Building was the last building to be razed in 1982 and delayed development of the original plan as the Taylor Shop, also a women’s apparel store, had a long term lease at this location.

ASB Development scaled back the plans of an original three story building at street level. “Phase One” created three store fronts of one story in height on Main Street with offices in the basement for bank use. The building was built around the old Barnard Building on the north end of the site. When completed Narzarian’s Jewelry Store and Walden Books opened in the new retail space.

In 1982 “Phase Two” added 16,500 square feet of additional office and retail space. The old Barnard building was razed and the ASB Building was continued to the right-of-way of the National Bank building. This added an additional two storefront on Main St. A second story was also added at this time for additional office space for the bank. Channel Building Co. were the contractors.
The original curved glass canopy awning over the retail storefronts was replaced in 2010 with the current shed roof awning.
