Historical Narrative:
This house was built about 1922 at 10 Fletcher Street and was part of the Shawsheen Village development by William M. Wood, president of the American Woolen Company. With the construction of the new interstate highway Route 495 in the early 1960's all homes and buildings in the path of the roadway were taken by eminent domain by the State of Massachusetts. Every home on Fletcher Street and the south half of Binney Street were razed. A total of 20 houses in this area were taken and 26 families forced to move out of their much loved neighborhood. The current overpass on South Union Street was were Fletcher St. was located. A few houses were saved from destruction and moved to new locations in Andover and Lawrence.
In June 1932 the Textile Realty Co. sold the property holdings to the Andover Shawsheen Realty Co. They continued to sell and lease the properties. On Oct. 23, 1936 the home at 11 Fletcher St was purchased by Frederick B. & Evelyn H. Cole. The Coles owned for twenty years then sold to Mario & Veronica Giannini on Feb. 23, 1956. Giannini then secured a 20 year mortgage through the Prince Macaroni Manf. Co. for $10,000. It later was then transferred to the Union National Bank. Mario b. 1923 was an engineer. The property was taken by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on Dec. 29, 1960. (b. 929 p. 334 parcels 9-79.) See map #4205 for path route of 495 and all homes taken for construction. In 1961 the Mario & Veronica continue to occupy the home.
This home was rescued by Donald I. Richmond and moved to this location about 1963. In 1961 Mario & Veronica Giannini lived at 10 Fletcher St. The moved house was sold to Joseph C. & Cynthia L. Tardif on Sept. 17, 1965 the first residents at this location.
