309 River Road

Architectural Description:

Style: Late Federal Cape style home.

This Cape style home, when built, most likely had a symmetrical front facade with two windows flanking both sides of the front entrance. A property plan of the Elbridge Gerry Hardy estate done in April 1934 (plan map #927) shows the house with an attached ell and barn to the west side of the house.

Historical Narrative:

Themes: Architectural, Community development
This house was once the homestead of David Abbot and purchased by his son Jonathan Abbot, wife Lydia. Jonathan acquired the 12 acre house lot and 34 acre lot across the street on April 1, 1833 from William Foster for $1000. Jonathan coveys the property the following year to David Gray for $1000. and states in the deed "the same on which I now reside and was the homestead place of my father David Abbot deceased". The property included 54 acre 62 rods "with buildings then standing." The deed appears to be a mortgage deed.

The Andover Institution of Savings may have bought the mortgage deed, as they sell the property to Stephen Hardy 2nd on Nov. 19, 1838. In the Andover Valuation Schedule of 1850 Stephen Hardy Jr. is assessed: Dwelling house $350, barn 7 shed $200. 13 acres adjoining $325. 39 acres front of house $850. 6 acres young wood $168. 6 acre Stickney meadow, and farm stock $178. Stephen would borrow $2000. from Elbridge Gerry Hardy who would later purchased the farm on Nov. 1, 1882. Known as E. Gerry Hardy and wife Mary A. held the property for 40 years then selling to Leon W. Hardy on Oct. 16, 1922. The property remained with the Hardy family until sold to Mitchell & Hilda H. Peterof on July 21, 1958.
