31 Bartlet Street

Historical Narrative: 

This property, like the Park and Town school buildings across the street were once owned by the Richardson family and part of their farm. Joseph Richardson sold a parcel of the land to George L. Abbott in 1867. Abbott developed several properties on Punchard Ave. & Bartlet Street.

With the death of George L. Abbott his estate was administered by George H Poor on June 1, 1895 through probate. The house and property was sold to Clark Carter on June 1, 1895. Rev. Clark Carter, a clergyman was connected with a City mission in Lawrence, MA.
Clark was born on Oct. 16, 1842 in Holliston, MA, son of Elisha & Harriet W. Carter. Clark became in minister, married in Boston on May 19, 1870 to Emma H. Pease b. May 24, 1841 in Cambridge, MA daughter of Rev. Giles & Mabel Richardson (Mosley) Pease. Her father married the couple and was also a physician.

By 1880 Clark & Emma are living at 26 Andover St. in Lawrence. The have four children; Alice Cleveland b. Mar. 22, 1874, Harriet W. b. Apr. 3, 1873, Mabel Mosley b. Oct. 14, 1872 and Edward b. June 9, 1878. Father-in-law Dr. Giles Pease is also listed with them.

Clark does not appear as a minister at any church in Andover during their time in town. His daughter Harriet becomes a teacher and begins her career at the one room Osgood District schoolhouse in 1898 with students from first to ninth grade. Harriet begins teaching third grade at the John Dove School across the street from this home from 1901 - 1904.

Emma H. Clark died on Nov. 17, 1914 and Clarke Carter died May 8, 1920. The property was inherited by the daughters who remained in the home until their deaths. All are interred at Spring grove Cemetery, Andover, MA
