32 Maple Avenue

Historical Narrative: 

Maple Ave. was once a 17 acre parcel of land that was owned by Samuel G. Valpey who purchased the home at 60 Elm Street for $6600 on Feb. 17, 1855. The Maple Ave parcel of 17 acres 26 rods was purchased at auction by John H. Flint for $858.12 on June 16, 1866. Andover Advertiser (AA) Oct. 23, 1874 – John H. Flint is at work on a new avenue leading through his land from Elm Street to Carmel lane. AA - July 23, 1875 - Maple St. opened; description of 1st house, a brick one on Flint's land.

This parcel was once part of the Gleason property next door at 28 Maple Ave. The property was purchased by Annie (West) & Fred Swanton on June 13, 1914 who sub-divided the lot and sold this parcel to Agnes Heape on June 16, 1916. Agnes was born on April 3, 1874 in Gaysville, VT, dau. of James & Elizabeth (Buchanan) Heape. Agnes married in 1916 to John Payson West b. Aug. 16, 1851 in Wiscasset, Maine, son of Alfred and Isabella (Roberts) West. Agnes was John’s second wife. John’s first wife Rosa E. Jackson died on Jan. 23, 1913 in Andover. They had six children all born in Maine of which four survived to adulthood; Annie B. b. Apr. 2, 1875, Leonard b. 1876 – d. 1878, Cora B. b. 1878- d. 1879, Jesse Earl b. Mar. 17, 1882, Elthel Mae b. Oct. 15, 1883, and Florence R. b. May 23, 1888. Daughter Annie B. West was the wife of Fred Swanton who sold the lot to Agnes.

John West was a very successful baker in town and had his shop the “J. P. West Pure Food Bakery” at 11 Barnard St. from 1904-June 1910. [see 9-11 Barnard St.] West then moved over to 12 Park Street in the brick Howell Block as the West Family Bakery. Agnes is listed as a baker in the 1920 census and worked with John. His son Jessie also worked with his father.

They owned this house for ten years and when John retired they sold to Harry W. & Mabel L Wadman on June 1, 1926. Annie and John then purchased 84 Maple Ave and moved down the street.

Harry Wallace Wadman was b. Sept. 29, 1879 in Bear River, Nova Scotia, Canada, son of Thomas W. & Annie (Crouse) Wadman. Harry was an accountant at Stone & Webster Engineering Co. in Boston. He married May 26, 1909 in Chelsea, MA to Mable Kimball b. 1881 in So. Boston MA, dau. of Gardner J. & Martha (Butterly) Kimball. They had twin sons Homer C. & Clifford P. born in 1910 in Dorchester, MA. Harry died on May 27, 1956 and his widow Mabel sold to Roland & Jean Weeks on May 7, 1957. Wadmans owned for 30 years.
