The 1830 map of Andover lists an S. Kendall (Samuel) at this location on Brown St. Francis Caldwell, wife Elizabeth purchase this property on Apr. 27, 1847 for $1200. Henry W. Brown of Lowell, MA and wife Thurza J. purchase three parcels from Caldwell on Nov. 9, 1849 for $1250. The 1850 Census in Lowell lists Henry W. Brown, age 35, MA Engineer. His wife Thurza J. 29, born, daughter Thurza J. age 12 MA, Henry P. Tilden 27, MA no occupation, wife Betsey Tilden age 24 b. NH and son Charles Henry Tilden age 11 months b. in MA.
The 1852 map of Andover now list H. Brown at this address. The 1855 Mass. State Census in Andover gives: Henry W. Brown, age 39, b. Newton, MA, Engineer Railroad. Wife Thurza J. 35, born in Holderness, NH, Henry W. Jones 15, of Townsend, MA laborer. Also included in the household are Betsey Tilden age 26 b. in Holderness, NH and son Charles H. Tilden age 6 b. in Lowell. Rebecca Brown age 74 and Emeline Brown age 40 also reside here. We assume the latter two are Henry's mother and sister.
Henry married on Dec. 7, 1843 in Lowell, MA to Thurza Jane Jackson, b. Mar. 1818 in Holderness, NH, daughter of Solomon & Betsey (Morrill) Jackson. Thurza's sister is Betsey M. Jackson (b. Mar. 1827), who married Henry P. Tilden, was widowed young, as she appears to have lived out her adult life with Thurza Brown. Henry W. Brown goes from Engineer to Machinist and farmer by 1870s. The 1870 Valuation schedule lists Henry Brown's property assessment; house $500, barn $200. 26 3/4 acres $650. and farm stock $120. Henry died of paralysis at age 63 on Nov. 3, 1878. He was interred in Lowell, MA.
Thurza J. Brown takes in boarders in 1880. Silas Shedd and his sister Hannah B. Shedd are living here during the 1880 census, as is Benny Batchelder, a laborer. Hannah B. Shedd was half owner of the home at 47 Brown St. Thurza J. Brown died on Jan. 26, 1901 and her estate was probated on May 13, 1901. Her sister Betsey Tilden then has the property until her estate, handled by Samuel H. Boutwell sells of the farm to John Albert Humphrey in Jan. 1917. Betsy died in Andover on July 10, 1918.
The property was sold to Henry F. Fenton of Tewksbury in July 1917 and in turn sold to Thomas H. Dixon, wife Daisy E. on Sept.24, 1917. Dixon owned for 16 years then selling to Edna Rose Steward, wife of Elmer Stewart of Chelmsford, MA.
John P. & Thelma E. Twoomey of Danvers, MA were the next owners, purchasing on July 13, 1951. Toomey owned for 18 years. The home was then bought by Frederick Pease of Lowell, MA on Aug. 1, 1869. Fred & Betty Pease continue as owners of record, now 47 years in 2016. Fred Pease was the Superintend of the West Parish Cemetery for 25 years prior to his retirement in 2002.
