Historical Narrative:

There are eight spellings in the Andover Vital Records for Haggett: Hagget, Haggett, Haggit, Haggith, Haggitt, Hagitte, Heiget, Heighett.
Haggett’s Pond is named for the Haggett family but prior to the name change it was referenced in deeds in 1679 as Five-mile Pond and also Blanchard’s Pond.

The first Haggett family homestead is located at 67 Haggetts Pond Road. Moses Haggett (I) bought land in 1679 from brother-in-law, Stephen Johnson "14 acres of upland and 7 acres marsh, southwest side of Pond agreeing to pay twelve shillings a year to all charges of church and towne.” Moses Haggett b. 1650 Ipswich, married in Andover on Oct. 23, 1671 to Joanna Johnson b. 1651 in Ipswich, MA dau. of John & Susanna (Munter) Johnson who later moved to Andover. They had five children; Moses b. 1675, William b. 1677, Timothy b. Jan 26, 1681, Thomas b. Oct. 10, 1684 and Henry b. 1695. Joanna died in 1715. It is unknown when Moses died but if he followed British tradition oldest son Moses would have inherited. We do know his brothers William and Timothy both held property nearby and may have shared the homestead. William’s son Thomas sold the homestead to Joseph Burtt in 1755.

Oldest son Moses (Heigett) Haggett (II) b. 1675, a Husbandman, married Martha Grangier on Feb. 21, 1699. Moses & Martha had ten children; Martha b. Mar. 6, 1726. It appears that Moses built a home at 36 Haggetts Pond Rd. as the ownership line follows to that location.

Moses Sr. (II) sold half of his farm to his son Moses Haggit Jr. on Dec. 20, 1733 for 300 pounds. Moses Sr. deeded “all his homestead lands and buildings” to Moses Jr., on in Feb. 1742 recorded on June 4, 1742. Moses Sr. died on April 1, 1742.

Moses Haggit b. 1703/4, a yeoman, married Sarah Head b. 1711 of Bradford, MA on Jan. 20, 1728/9. Moses Jr. and Sarah had nine children: Sarah bpt. Apr. 19, 1730, Moses Jr. b. Moses and Sarah joined the South Church on Feb. 29, 1756. Moses died Sept. 8, 1763 age 60 and Sarah died Jan. 3, 1771. In Moses will, he leaves his entire estate to his "only surviving son Jacob" when he reaches 21 years of age.

Jacob Hagget inherits the homestead farm the following Feb 1764. Jacob married on Dec. 6, 1764 to Deborah Stevens b. June 21, 1742 dau. of John Jr. & Lydia (Gray) Stevens. Jacob and Deborah had two daughters; Rhoda b. Sept. 30, 1765 and Phebe b. May 7, 1767. Jacob died on Jan. 29, 1769 age 26. Widow Deborah received 1/3 of the estate and daughters the other 2/3. Deborah joined the South Church on Dec. 13, 1772 and would remarry on Feb. 23, 1775 to Simon Crosby of Chelmsford. Simon b. Sept. 14, 1741 in Billerica joined the church on May 15, 1776. Daughter Rhoda married William Pettingill of Wilton, NH on Feb. 28, 1782. Phebe married Oct. 14, 1784 to Bartholomew Hutchinson of Wilton, NH.

Deborah and Simon Crosby continue to live in the homestead. By 1818 both are in poor health. William Trow creates an Indenture deed to John Crosby and John Jr. on Mar. 11, 1818 who take control of the farm and agree the care and provide for Deborah and Simon until their deaths. Deborah died on Aug. 27, 1818. Son-in law Bartholomew Hutchinson administered the estate. Simon died on Oct. 30, 1820.

Paul also sells a small piece of land to the Salem Ice Co. between the rail road line and Haggetts Pond to use for their ice storage houses.

The 1860 census lists Seth Chase and family living here. Seth’s niece Eliza Ann was Paul Follansbee’s wife. Seth b. July 28, 1809 in Andover, son of John & Anna (Cochran) Chase.
