Historical Narrative:
Historical significance: Addison LeBouttillier was a locally and nationally famous Arts and Crafts designer for the Gruby Pottery Co. in Boston. He was a gifted architect as well and did several homes and additions in Andover. His work shows aspects of the craftsman aesthetic as well as those of the Colonial Revival movement. His work is well respected. More information in LeBoutillier family files at Andover Historical Society.
LeBoutillier likely designed this house for his daughter Winifred Tyer and her husband, Henry Tyer in 1928. He also designed the home next door at 45 Sunset Rock Road in 1938, and a small stone cottage nearby at 100 Spring Grove Road in 1908.

Henry grew up in the Tyer homestead at 1 Chestnut St. Henry married Oct. 1, 1919 at the home of the bride’s parent’s on Orchard St. in Andover to Winifred Hopkins LeBoutillier, b. July 6, 1923.
Henry purchased a 4 acre lot on Sunset Rock Rd. on Nov. 9, 1922 from Mary F. Babbitt of Haverford College in Pennsylvania. Winnie’s father Addison LeBoutillier was an architect and artist and designed the house for the couple which was built in 1928-29 as the Tyers are listed here in the 1930 Directory and Census. Henry deeds the property over to Winifred in 1931. Henry & Winnie later built the home at 100 Spring Grove attached to a field stone building referred to as “The Lodge” in the mid 1940’s. The Tyers sold the home to John & Emily F. Christison on Aug. 1, 1947. Henry died suddenly while on vacation in Rockwood, Maine on Sept. 26, 1947. Winnifred remained at 100 Spring Grove Rd. home until her death on Dec. 9, 1991. Daughter Beatrice Tyer graduated from Abbot Academy, became a teacher and taught in Troy, NY in 1943 and Chester, VA in 1947. She married in 1951 to John Lyle Campbell.
