Edward T & Myra D. Ward House
This property was once owned by John H. Flint, wife Frances A. Flint. Flint was a prominent businessman, former President of the Tyer Rubber Co. and lived in a mansion house at 8 Elm St. facing Elm Square. John H. Campion purchased the property on July 5, 1905 which included #48 Summer St. & #42 Washington Ave. Campion's business partner Barnett Rodgers is n then transferred the deed. July 5, 1905. The lot was then sub-divided.

This property with buildings was purchased from Barnett Rogers, an Andover Realtor, by Edward Thurston Ward on July 5, 1905. Edward, one of nine children, was born Dec. 28, 1883 in Milleville, Kings Co., Nova Scotia, son of William Albert & Letetia (Hagerman) Ward. Edward emigrated in 1900 settling in Andover. Edward was a Hostler at a private stable in Andover when he married on Aug. 1, 1906 to Myra Dean Symonds b. Mar. 18, 1885 in Andover, dau. of Henry W. & Alice (Dean) Symonds who are list here on the 1906 map, then moved across the street at 41 Washington Ave. Edward & Myra had five children: Everett Thurston b. May 14, 1907, Winthrop “Dean” b. Dec. 10, 1910, Winifred Symonds b. Apr. 22, 1917, William Henry b. June 1. 1919 and Berton Sheldon b. Sept. 4, 1922. Edward changed occupations to painter. They lived here 22 years then sold on July 20, 1927 to John & Florence Holmelund. Ward moved to Wilmington but later returned to Andover residing in Ballardvale.

John Holmelund was born in 1896, Jens Rasmus Olsen Holmelund son of Danish parents, mother Anna Christine. John was the manager of A& P Tea Company at 7 Elm St. in the Elm Block. John married in 1922 to Florence Lyyke b. Nov. 27, 1900 in West New Haven, CT. dau. of John P. & Muriel Lykke, also Danish. John & Florence had three children; Carol Marie b. Nov. 20, 1922, Walter John b. Nov. 21, 1923 and Arthur George b. Feb. 22, 1927. John sold the home on July 20, 1935 to Catherine Leary. Sadly on a trip to his homeland with his family to Frederica, Denmark John died on Sept. 21, 1935 age 39.

Catherine Teresa Leary purchased the property on Aug. 21, 1935, dau. of John H. & Mary (Donovan) Leary. Catherine b. Oct. 14, 1898 worked as a secretary at Tyer Rubber Co. Her father John H b. Oct. 1871 in Andover, MA was a house carpenter. Her mother Mary, born Aug. 1874 in Ireland, dau. of Jeremiah & Ellen (Hurley) Donovan immigrated in 1890, settled and married in Andover on June 18. 1895. John H.& Mary had eight children: Arthur J. b. Oct. 1896, Catherine Teresa b. Oct. 14, 1898, John b. Oct. 1899, Mary R. b. 1902, Elizabeth b. 1904, Harold b. 1906, Anna b. Feb. 1910 and Margaret F. b. 1914.
Catherine’s parents separated in the 1930’s and her mother lived with Catherine and her adult children in the Washington Ave house. Sibling Arthur was a janitor at Phillips Academy, John worked for Smith & Dove Co. then Leary Brothers service station at 14 North Main St. Mary R. graduated from Lowell Teachers College and taught second grade at Shawsheen School from 1928-1966. Anna became a nurse.
