Historical Narrative:
Themes - Architectural, Community Development
This property was once owned by Tarbell W. & Catherine S. Robbins in 1871 and sold to Sylvester Smith of Worcester, MA on Sept. 1, 1871. The deed reference lists the parcel as "on the lower road to Lawrence from Frye Village", (now Union St.). Sylvester Smith died "seized" intestate and his widow Louisa Smith, J. Walter Smith widower and Cleora L. Sumner, wife of Edwin A. Sumner, all of Worcester, were the heirs of the property through Probate in 1890.
George E. Murray purchased the lot on Sept. 10, 1890, and built the Queen Anne home to the north (#437) about 1891-92. Murray owned Murray Brothers Inc.1892, wholesale grocers in Lawrence at 617 Common St. across from the B&M Passenger Station. The Murrays are listed at #437 No. Main St. in 1893 Andover Directory.
George Edwin Murry was born Nov. 24, 1854, in Lebanon, ME, son of Lewis & Arabella (Goodwin) Murray. George was a graduate of Colby College in 1879 and later a Trustee. George married on Nov. 27, 1884, in Portland, ME, to Cora Milly Tuttle b. Dec. 6, 1859, in Athens, ME, dau. of James H. & Amanda (Grant) Tuttle.
The 1900 Census records include Arthur Pearl Tuttle age 21, b. Feb. 24, 1879, in Athens, ME, as a boarder and clerk at Murray's business. Arthur was the brother of Cora. George and Cora did not have children. Arthur Tuttle attended Dartmouth College (1898-1900) class of 1902 but withdrew. Arthur married on Sept. 26, 1903, in Lawrence, to Myra H Warburton b.1879 in Lawrence, a schoolteacher, dau. of Joseph & Hannah (Riley) Warburton. They had one son Murray Tuttle. b. 1905. Arthur lived with the Murrays, became treasurer of Murry Bros. and later President after George retired. An Aunt of Myra's, Harriet Ryley, born in England also made her home here.
George Murry built the new Mission style bungalow on the south end of his property about 1908-09. The 1906 map of Frye Village does not have this home on the Murray property. George then sub-divides to property and sells their home at #437 to his brother-in-law and business partner Arthur P. & Myra W. Tuttle on Jan. 23, 1909. The 1910 Census lists George and Cora living at #435.
George Murray died on Sept. 21, 1932, in Andover at age 79. He is interred at West Parish Garden Cemetery. Cora inherited the property though probate. Cora’s brother Arthur Tuttle died July 12, 1936, in Wolfeboro, NH at their summer home of heart failure. He was age 57 years. Cora Murray sold the property on July 6, 1939, to William A. & Mary Hopkins. Cora Murray died on Nov. 6, 1964, in Hampstead, NH. Myra H. Tuttle died on June 4, 1959, and are interred at West Parish Cemetery.
William Hopkins was a dental surgeon. They owned just five years then selling to Frank & Elsa P. Turrisi. Turrisi held for six years then sold to John F. & Stephanie Scuderi on Nov. 20, 1950. Scuderi was a merchant and acquired the second parcel connected with the deed. In 1960 a portion of the property was taken to widen the street when construction of Interstate 495 began. Prior to the highway both North Main and Union Streets were open to two-way traffic. It was only after completion that both streets were made one way. North Main to south bound traffic from Lawrence, and Union St. north bound from Andover and Shawsheen Village. Although this home was not built as part of the Shawsheen Village 1919-1924 it is still considered within the Shawsheen district.
John F. Scudiri b. 1915, died on Sept. 7, 1971. Stephanie Scuderi, b. 1918 widow and heir then sold the following year to Kevin C. Sullivan of Tewksbury, MA on July 11, 1972.
Domenic & Louise Nicolosi purchased the home on Mar. 30, 1981, and owned for 25 years. Domenic b. 1938 is a tailor and wife Louisa b. 1950 a seamstress. The home appears to have been divided into a two family in 1981 as Warren H. & Lorraine Cormier are also listed at this address with children Kim, Warren Jr, Scott W. and Cathy L.
