Historical Narrative:

5 Summer Street – 39-94 Callahan – White House
Plan #7718 – John B. Jr. & Rita A. White Nov. 1977
Built 1896

The Trustees of Phillips Academy once held this land and sold the parcel to Nathaniel Whittier of $600 Oct. 3, 1835, “with a building” on the road leading to Whittier’s house which was 10 Summer Street. That parcel was the triangular lot of #1 Summer St. which extended from Elm St. up Summer and included the current lot of #5 Summer St.

Whittler then sells the 32 square rods lot for $600 to William Bailey Lovejoy, a carpenter, on the same day. Lovejoy took a loan from the Trustees of PA for $500 in 1835, which mentions “buildings” in the deed. It is most likely that Lovejoy built the dwelling house or converted the building into a house in 1835. Lovejoy owned for six years then sold to Menzies Christopher Andrews for $275 on April 16, 1841. The loan was paid off in 1842 after Lovejoy had sold the property. That deed states with house and other buildings.
From 1846 to 1886 the property was sold ten times to different people. For a complete history on the owners see 1 Summer Street.

On July 24, 1886 Clara M. (Rehill) Sulkoski, wife of Edwin purchased the property at # 1 Summer St for $2000. (The property was consistently listed as #3 Summer St.)
Clara M. Rehill was born on Aug. 1849 in Massachusetts and in the 1880 Census was working as a Cook at the Mansion House on Main Street at Phillips Academy under proprietor Charles L. Carter. Clara married in 1886 to Edwin Sulkoski b. in May 1845 in Boston and came to Andover at age 11. His father was Polish and Mother Irish. Edwin worked at the Tyer Rubber Co. as a soft rubber molder and then a pressman. Clara & Edwin had only one child, a son David C. Sulkoski b. Aug. 1888 and died Aug. 25, 1888.

Andover Townsman -2/21/1896 p. 1 Edwin Sulkoski, is to have a house erected next to his present residence on Summer Street. It will be built by Richardson & Pitman.
The second house was added to the property by Sulkoski at #5 Summer St. and both houses are listed in the 1900 Valuation for Edwin Sulkoski: 3 Summer St. - House $800 Barn $250, House #5 Summer St. $1050 land 16958 sq. ft. at #3 & #5 $750 = 2850.
The 1897 Andover Directory lists Fred W. Higgins, foreman for W.H. Higgins h. 5 Summer St.
The Census of 1900 also lists Fred W. Higgins b. July 1861 age 38, Superintendent of the Park St. Stables. His wife Ida R. 44 was a Dressmaker. Their daughter Nellie G. 24, was asst. bookkeeper at T.A. Holt’s general store located in the basement of the Baptist Church.

In 1904 Hiland F. Holt a dentist and Mrs. Marie L. Holt are listed at $5 Summer St. Hiland’s office is at 38 Main St. In 1908 they have moved to the Elm Block at 7 Elm Street.

In 1910 Census - David Young age 45 wife Etta S. and dau. Elizabeth M. age 16 are renting the house at #5. David is also here in the 1908 Resident Directory. David was a meat cutter at Valpey’s Butcher Shop at 2 Main St., where the Simeone Building is today. He would later purchase the business with David Lindsey in 1916.

Edwin Sulkoski died on July 18, 1913, after a short illness and is interred at St. Augustine’s Cemetery.
Clara remained in their home, taking in boarders. On March 20, 1915, Clara sold the new house at 5 Summer St. along with a portion of her lot to Martin J. & Mary E. Callahan. Clara later sold her home after 40 years of ownership on May 12, 1926. Clara held the longest occupancy by an owner since the house was constructed. Clara moved to 75 Maple Ave. and died in 1929.

Martin Joseph Callahan was born on Nov. 17, 1877, in Ireland and immigrated in 1904. He married in 1903 to Mary E. Golden b. 1880 in Ireland. Martin worked for Smith & Dove Manufacturing Co. in the Hemp selection for twine. With the closing of Smith & Dove in 1928, Martin became a gardener for a private family. The 1910 Census has them living at Maple Ave. Mary is listed as a laundress for a private family. A Passenger log of the S.S. Devonian arriving in Boston of Sept. 11, 1926, lists Martin and Mary Callahan of 5 Summer St, Andover, Mass. They most likely took a trip home to Ireland to see family. In 1930 Mary’s sister Catherine A. Golden age 54 is living with them at Summer St. Her immigration is stated as 1879. Catherine continued to live with Martin and Mary. Martin died on Nov. 6, 1941, in Lawrence. His obituary states that he was a member of St. Augustine’s Holy Name Society and was employed as a gardener in Andover for many years. He had a brother Patrick and sister Mrs. Cecilia Foley, both in Ireland. Martin was interred at St. Augustine’s Cemetery. Mary died in 1954.

Martin J. Callahan’s estate was administered by John A. McLauchlan via Probate and the property was sold on Oct. 14, 1954 to John B. & Rita Ann White for $4000. The Callahan family owned for 39 years.

John Brady White Jr. was born October 8, 1926, in Andover, son of John B. &. Sarah White. John had an older sister Annie H.
John graduated from Punchard High School in 1944 and joined the Navy on Nov. 3, 1944. He served two years and was honorably discharged on May 5, 1946. John became a Postal Carrier in Andover for 36 years then worked at the Andover water treatment plant for 17 years. He was also a member of the Andover Elks Lodge. John married in 1951 to Rita Ann McCarthy b. June 19, 1928, in Lawrence, MA, dau. of James & Margaret E. (O’Brien) McCarthy. Rita worked as a crossing guard in Andover. John & Rita had four children, Marilyn, Joanne, Patricia B. and John Daniel. Rita died on April 27, 2002, in Lawrence and John B. Jr. died on July 20, 2002, in Methuen.

The property was purchased by their son John Daniel White and his wife Joanne on July 20, 2009. They owned until 2021 when selling to Bradley S. & Lori A. Weeden on Sept. 18, 2021. The White family owned for 67 years.
