Historical Narrative: 

The property was owned by Anna B. Abbott in 1907 when she sold off this corner lot to Myron F. Gutterson on August 28, 1907. The deed came with provisions than "only a single family dwelling and the buildings properly pertaining there to, shall be erected on said land, for a term of twenty five years from the date here of." The cost of the house shall be no less than $4000.

Myron Edwards Gutterson was born Feb. 18, 1863 in the Phelps homestead on Salem St. in Andover. Myron was the son of George and Hannah (Phelps) Gutterson. Myron married at age 25 on Oct. 11, 1888 to Annie Elizabeth Tyler b. Feb. 23, 1863 dau. of Eben B. & Nancy M. (Jones) Tyler. They had one daughter Margaret T. b. April 1890 who sadly died Aug. 20, 1890 age 5m 19 days. Myron & Elizabeth rented the house at 5 Maple Ave. prior to building this home.

Myron had a scrap metal business in Lawrence, "Gutterson & Gould" at 54 Medford, St. His partner was Edward S. Gould. Myron purchased the Phelps homestead property at 41 Salem St. in 1900. He subdivided that property and two new homes were built there. The Phelps homestead was razed and the house at 41 Salem St. is the same house built on this lot at 57 Chestnut St. circa 1911. In the 1910 census Gutterson were renting 5 Maple Ave.
Elizabeth Gutterson died in 1935. Myron remarried about 1937 to Eleanor G. b. 1876 in Turkey. The 1940 census list Eleanor with 5 years of college. Myron died in 1942 and is interred at Spring Grove Cemetery.

Charles F. & Jeanie S. Dalton purchased the home on Jan. 7, 1944, from Eleanor Gutterson. Charles Frederick Dalton b. 12/16/1899, in Amesbury, son of Harry C. & Mary E. Dalton. His father died in 1909, and his mother moved the family to Andover. Charles attended the Andover public schools graduated from Punchard High School in 1918 where he quarterbacked two undefeated football teams. He was a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and began his career as a Pharmacist for Lowe & Co. Pharmacy at 16 Main St. Charles later became a partner, then owner of the business under the name Dalton’s Drug Store.

Charlie married Dec. 16, 1937, in Chelmsford, MA to Jeanie Lauretta Scannell b. Nov. 9, 1911, in Andover dau. of Lawrence & Ammie (McKenzie) Scannell. Jeanie was lifelong resident, a bookkeeper for W.R. Hill's Hardware in Andover. She was an active member of Christ Church of Andover.
Charles was one of the co-founders of the Andover Boosters Club, established in 1947 to provide high school equipment and supplies to the athletic department. In 1982, Mr. Dalton was inducted into the Andover Athletics Hall of Fame along with his oldest son. Charles & Jeanie had three sons, Charles F. “Buckey” Jr, b. 1940, William J. b. 1943 and Robert M. b. 1948. Charles retired and his business became Hughes Drug Store. Charles died on Nov. 11, 1983, age 83. His widow Jeanie died on Oct. 20, 1985, at age 82. Both are interred at West Parish Garden Cemetery. The Dalton family owned the property for 42 years.
