Historical significance: 1830 Andover map shows a house/ no name listed other maps list - S. Morrill in 1852 and J. Blunt in 1856.
The deed line goes back to Daniel Cummings, wife Hannah, who sold the 1 acre 12 rods property to Timothy Holt, Jr. for $100. Holt took a $200 mortgage from the Trustees of Phillips Academy on Oct. 11, 1813. Timothy died on Feb. 19, 1821 before paying the loan off and the Trustees, holding the deed then sold the mortgage deed to Israel Putnam
on Nov. 9, 1824. Putnam, a Trader, and his wife Mary occupied the house and then sold to Timothy Holt Jr. for $900 on Dec. 27, 1828.
Orlando Abbot & Samuel K. Hutchinson purchased the property on Oct. 5, 1833 and then sell three years later to Mark H. Newman, bookseller for $1000. Newman then sells to Samuel Morrill, Printer, wife Hannah, on Oct. 7, 1837. Morrill owns for 15 years. The 1850 Andover Valuation schedule lists Sam Morrill; Dwelling house & barn $1500, Clement barn $150, 9 acre Clement land $585, 2 1/4 acres Russell land $146, and 1 3/4 ace House lot $140. Morrill owned farm stock valued at $70.
Isaac Blunt, Yeoman, wife Dolly, purchased the home for $2300 on Nov. 1, 1852 and hold four years. Blunt then sold to Augustus F. Lemon, a Bookbinder, wife Hannah B., on Dec. 25, 1856. Lemon owned six years then sold to Sarah Morrill, wife of Rev. Horatio Morrill for $2000 on on May 26, 1862. They hold four years also then sell to Henry A. Bodwell, wife Emma on Aug. 31, 1866. Bodwell paid $2650.
On August 18, 1869 Henry A. & Emma A. Bodwell sold to Harriet E. Adams for $3000. Harriet Adams, a widow, was born in 1837 in NH. In the 1880 Census she and four children are living here; John D. Adams age 21 b. 1859 is attending school, Charles F. age 18 b. 1862, Apprentice Machinist, William H. L. age 15 b. 1865 at home and Eva S. age 12, b. 1868 attending school. All four children were born in New Jersey.
Harriet Adams took a mortgage for $1500 on Dec. 18, 1882 from Luther S. Lord of Boston . Harriet later sells the property to Evangeline S. Adams on April 22, 1891, with a life tenancy in the home. Harriet had yet to settle her mortgage with Lord and he took possession of the property on March 31,1902. Evangeline Adams then filed with the land court as rightful title to the property. She pays off the outstanding loan and receives title to the property in June 1902.
Emma Snow then purchased the property from Adams on June 24, 1902. The 1900 Census lists Franklin Snow b. Dec. 1858, age 41, a Commercial Merchant, wife Emma G. b. Mar. 1858 age 42, Franklin T. b. Feb. 1897 age 3 and Ellen M. Gilmore b. Oct. 1833 age 55 widow, mother-in-law. There is also a Catherine Foley b. Nov. 18, 1845 widow, servant. Snow is listed again in the 1910 census. Emma Snow held the property deed for 12 years then selling to Fred W. Colby of Lawrence on Nov. 28, 1914.
Fred & wife Anna Colby held the property until 1941. Fred Colby was b. 1853 in New Hampshire. Emma was b. 1856 in MA, and daughter Esther b. 1892. Fred is a Retail Clerk meat market,. Esther is an office manager for a Mill Supply Co. In the 1940 Census Emma is a widow and Esther is now a secretary in an Attorney's office. With the death of her mother, (Census records list Emma Colby, deeds give name as Anna Colby.), Esther Colby then sold the property to Emery E. Trott, wife Mabel J. of Stonehedge Rd. on April 22, 1941.
Emery J. Trott and wife Emma D. Trott sub-divided the property at #58 through the Zoning Board of Appeals on Dec. 9, 1957. See. plan 409-B. The larger lot to the rear was then sold to Munro & Margaret Leaf on April 15, 1958. Leaf then built the home at #56 Salem Street.
Howard Twisden Mailey b. 1884 is listed in the 1942 directory as a manufacturing supervisor, married wife Esther L. Colby b. 1890 and Priscilla Mailey, a teacher in Marblehead, are residents here. Bertha Mailey b. 1887 is also living in the home in the 1960's. Howard died on July 31, 1966. Esther held the property until Sept. 7, 1973 when the property is deeded to the Cordon - Comwell Theological Seminary, Inc. of Hamilton, MA. The Seminary owned five years then voted to sell off the property.
Robert F. & Susan B. Worthen purchased the house on Nov. 6, 1978, held four years then sold to Stephen K. & Jean E. Niece on June 18, 1982. Niece then sold to Anders C. & Susan L Salazar on June 8, 1984. Andres & Susan owned eight years selling on Sept. 11, 1991 to Lawrence F. & Nancy L.Raymond. The Raymonds also owned for nearly eight years then selling to Larry D. & Marcia K. Sharpe on May 15, 1999. The Shapes owned for 16 years.
