George A Higgins purchased this lot of land from Varnum Lincoln in 1894.
Andover Townsman - Oct. 5, 1894, p. 1 - C. B. Mason has the contract to build the new house for G. A. Higgins on East Chestnut Street, and John McCarthy has begun work on the cellar.
George Arthur Higgins was born on Oct. 3, 1866, in Andover, son of Henry C. & Eliza A. (Abbott) Higgins. He attended local schools and graduated from Phillips Academy in 1884. George was the local editor of the Andover Townsman in 1894 and married on Oct. 17, 1894, to Agnes C. Morrison b. Feb. 28, 1870, dau. of Alexander & Christina (Maxwell) Morrison. Agnes was a teacher at the Richardson School in Frye Village. George & Agnes had two daughters: Gladys Abbott b. Nov. 1, 1895, and Helen Christina b. June 23, 1900.
In 1899 George is the proprietor of the Andover Book Store at 37 Main St. He was elected a a town auditor in 1904, Tax collector in 1905 and both Tax Collector & Town Treasurer in 1909. Town Clerk, a position he held from 1912-1930. In the 1930 George served as Comptroller at George Washington Hall for Phillips Academy. “He was president of the Massachusetts Town Clerks' Association and vice president of the New England City and Town Clerks' association, both of which he helped organize.
Also a member of St. Matthew's Lodge, A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years, he served as treasurer for 36 years. He was also treasurer of the Andover Guild for several years and a member of the Andover Square and Compass club, and Andover Lodge No. 230, I.0.0.F.“
His wife Agnes died on Nov. 29, 1919, after a long illness of several years. Both were members of Free Christian Church. George retired and sold his home to William P. & Blanche P. Hamblet on June 24, 1942, and moved to Pidgeon Cove, Rockport, MA. George died on Sept. 18, 1950, at the Addison Gilbert hospital, Gloucester, following a long illness. He is interred at Spring Grove Cemetery.
