67 High St- Flint – Jowett House
This property was once owned by John H. Flint who lived in a home at 1 Elm Square on the SE corner of Elm and High Streets. John H. was a successful business man in real estate and the market. He became the president of the Tyer Rubber Co. in 1876-1882 and treasurer from 1882-1914. John H. Flint developed Maple & Walcott Ave and several lots on High St. John sold this lot for $625 to William H. Jowett on April 11, 1887.

AA April 29, 1887 – W. S. Jowett is soon to build a house on the lot of land recently purchased of John H. Flint.
AA – May 6, 1887 - Supt. Jowett of the Stevens mills is visiting in Washington.
William Henry Jowett was born Mar. 5, 1836, in Pudsey, Yorkshire England, son of John & Mary Jowett. The family immigrated to Massachusetts about 1840, and his family may have first settled in Lowell. On Nov. 27, 1856, William married Mary Buckley b. Feb. 1837 in England, dau. of Charles & Elizabeth Buckley in Lawrence. Both were living in North Andover at the time of their marriage and William is listed as working as a Carder in a wool mill. (M.T. Stevens) William & Mary had four children: John Wm. b. Jan. 23, 1857, Charles H. b. Jan. 3, 1859, Mary A. b. July 28, 1862, and Jane Elizabeth. b. Feb. 22, 1872. The1880 Census lists the family in Andover, on North Main St, near the railroad bridge. William H. is the Superintendent of the Stevens Mill, (Marland Mill) then owned by M. T. Stevens of North Andover acquired in 1879.
The 1893 Andover Directory lists William as Supt. of Steven’s Mill, house on North Main St. near Harding St. His son John W. Jowett is living in their home at 67 High St. and is the Assist. Supt. at the mill. John’s brother Charles went from boss finisher in 1885 to Foreman at the Steven’s Mill and later to the Pacific Mill in Lawrence.
John W. Jowett married on April 13, 1882, in Methuen to Jane B. Buckley b. May 23, 1862, in Lawrence, dau. of James & Harriet (Jackson) Buckley. They had six children: Marietta b. March 1884m Britta v. May 1885, Elizabeth b. Aug. 1887, Jermaine b. Dec. 1889-d. June 6, 1893, William Henry b. Jan. 1892 and Walter b. Feb. 1894.

William moved to Haverhill and later returned to Andover living on Maple Ave. He sold the High St. property to Mrs. Sarah A. Hilton on Dec. 13, 1899, for $3850. William Jowett held the mortgage deed of Mrs. Hilton.
Sarah Ann (Battye) Hilton was born on June 30, 1852, in Wooddale, Yorkshire, England, dau. of Joseph & Lydia (Littlewood) Battye. Sarah married on March 3, 1870, in Saugus, MA to Henry Hilton b. May 8, 1848, in England. Their union produced ten children: Dan Curtis b. Jan 29, 1871, Joseph b. 1872, Jonathan b. May 28, 1873, Lydia A. b. Feb 21, 1875, Lucretia b. Dec. 1876, Henry b. May 1878, Herbert b. Dec. 1879, Lester b. Sept. 1881 Everett Cleveland b. Nov. 11, 1885, and Ethel Clara b. Sept. 29, 1887. The 1880 Census lists them in Stow, MA with 7 children. The 1885 Directory has Henry, in Andover, a spinner in the Stevens Mill and living at 5 Marland St. (Stevens St.). Sadly, Henry died on Jan 24, 1894. AT Jan. 26, 1894, Obituary. Just at noon Wednesday occurred the death of Henry Hilton at his home In Marland Village, after a short illness of pneumonia. Deceased was taken down with a cold last week but ventured out too soon with fatal results. He was a native of England and was 45 years old. For years he has been engaged as a spinner at Marland Mills, and was an honest, faithful, hardworking man. He leaves quite a large family. The funeral occurred this afternoon, Rev. Frederic Palmer officiating.
Feb. 2, 1894, p. 1 The funeral of the late Henry Hilton, of Marland Village, was held at Christ Church Friday afternoon, Rev. Frederic Palmer officiating, and the remains, were interred in the Episcopal cemetery. There were many pretty floral tributes. The bearers were J. Wrigley, W. Wrigley, Simeon Wrigley and Thomas Wrigley
p. 5 Card. We wish to express our sincere thanks to those who kindly displayed their sympathy in our bereavement, and to all we acknowledge our grateful appreciation of many tender offices so willingly performed. Mrs. Henry Hilton and family.
Sarah and her family were living at 202 North Main St. in Marland Mill housing in 1897. Son Dan worked at Stevens Mill, Jonathan at Tyer Rubber Co. and dau. Lydia. The 1900 Census has Sarah and nine of her children at 67 High St. Dan C. age 29 was Asst. Supt. at Stevens Mill. Jonathan 27 at Cutter at TRCo., Lydia 25 assembler TRCo., Lucretia 23, Henry 22, and Herbert 20 were weavers at the woolen mill. Lester 18 cutter TRCo. Everett C. 14 and Ethel 12 were at school.
The oldest child Dan Curtis Hilton b. Jan 29, 1871, married and moved to 21 Elm St and became Superintendent of the Steven’s Mill. He died on Aug. 28, 1917, age 46.
The family would have supported the household. Sarah remarried on April 11, 1901, to Joseph Battye at 40, b. May 25, 1860, in Yorkshire, England, son of John & Mary A. (Hinchcliffe) Battye. (Note: Battye was also Sarah’s maiden name.) Joseph immigrated in 1892 and lived in Dover, NH for 29 years, then moved to Lawrence and worked as a Percher at the Washington Mill. They are listed at 67 High St. in 1904, the same year Joseph was naturalized. The marriage did not last, and they had separated by 1908.
William H. Jowett called in the loan on his mortgage in September 1907 and the mortgage deed was sold at auction on Oct. 12, 1907, to John J. Connor of Lawrence for $3850. Connor then sold to Sarah’s son Everett C. Hilton on Oct. 15, 1907, for $1 and other considerations. Everett must have paid Connor $1850 as he then takes a loan from Wm. H. Jowett for $2000, which was paid to Jowett’s estate in 1940.
Everett worked at Tyer Rubber Co. and became Superintendent. He married in 1924 to Irene B. and in 1928 had moved to New Bedford, MA to manage a Rubber Co, there. Everett & Irene later lived in Fairhaven, MA. The Andover house was rented to his family.

1920 Census: Sarah A., Jonathan, carpenter TRCo, Henry Worsted mill, Everett Superintendent at Tyer Rubber Co. and Ethel.
1930 Census: Sarah A. age 78, Jonathan 55, TRCo, Henry 50 Loom fixer, & Ethel 40. They are renting the house from Everett.
Sarah A. Hilton died on Aug. 19, 1932, Andover Townsman Aug. 26, 1932 – p. 2 Obituary HILTON Mrs. Sarah Hilton, aged 81, died at her home, 67 High Street, last Friday evening after an illness of long duration. She was born in England and for many years had been a resident of Andover. She is survived by six sons, Joseph, Jonathan, Henry and Lester, all of Andover; Herbert of Gloucester; and Everett of New Bedford; and by three daughters, Mrs. Henry Todd, Miss Ethel Hilton, both of Andover; and Mrs. Harry L. Hodgdon of Lawrence. The funeral was held at the late home Monday afternoon, with Rev. Charles W Henry, rector of Christ church, officiating. Burial was in the Christ Church Cemetery.
Everett Hilton sold the Andover property to Harriett Lucile White on May 25, 1940.
Harriet Lucile White was born Oct. 19, 1890, in Blackstone, MA, dau. of Arthur & Nancy Isabelle (Joslyn) White. She was known as Lucile, and was the oldest of three, having a brother Clyde b. Sept. 1892 and sister Marjorie b. 1902. Her family lived in Blackstone and Rhode Island before moving to Andover. Her brother Clyde White was part owner of Andover Garage Co. at 90 Main St. and may have been reason the family moved to Andover. They rented 33 Washington Ave and later lived at 64½ High St. by 1937.
H. Lucile was and elementary school teacher in Medford, MA. After the death of her father, who worked at Tyer Rubber Co., her mother Nancy lived with Lucile at 67 High St. The
1950 Census states both upstairs in the home, with boarder Charlotte W. Frye age 69 b. NH. On the first floor are Louis & Marjorie (White) Wrigley, sister of Lucile and brother-in-law Lewis who also worked at TRCo.
As her health failed Lucille lived at the Randolph Nursing Home at 102 Burnham Rd. Conservators of her estate sold the property on Apr. 10, 1980 to Carold J. Payson for $58,000

Born in Blackstone. she was long-time resident of Andover and was a member of the Free Christian church. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in the Medford school system She is survived by a niece, retired Army Col Jocelyn White of St. Petersburg. Fla ; a nephew. James White of Holyoke and four grandnephews. Funeral services were held Monday at the Lundgren funeral home. 18 Elm St., Andover Burial was in Union cemetery. Woonsocket. R. I John L. Keane, Jr
Carold Payson owned for 10 years then selling to David B. & Susan K. Ickes on April 10, 1990. The deed was transferred to Susan K. Ickes on Oct. 16, 1996.
Deborah J. Day Smith purchased the property on Oct. 5, 1998, and continues ownership in 2025 as Deborah J. Day Cummings RLT, as trustee with her husband Doug Cummings.
