77 Maple Ave (formerly #37) –

This parcel lot was purchased on Dec. 11, 1891 by William H. Jowett, wife Mary from the heirs of Henry A. Bodwell. Bodwell purchased his parcel (#37) in 1883 from John H. Flint which included all the land on the east side of Maple Ave from #29 to Walnut St. This home was formerly numbered #37 and renumbered in 1928 to #77

William H. Jowett was born March 5, 1836 in England, son of John & Jane Jowett. His family immigrated to America in 1848 and William became a Naturalized Citizen on Oct. 4, 1866. William married on Nov. 26, 1856 in Lawrence, MA to Mary (Buckley) b. Feb. 1837 dau. of Charles & Elizabeth Buckley. Mary was a carder in the woolen mill. William & Mary had four children: John W. b. 1857, Charles U. b. 1859, Mary A. b. 1863 and Jane E. b. 1872.
William worked for M. T. Stevens Co. and would become Superintendent of the Woolen Mill. His sons John and Charles were also employed at the mill, John as Asst. Supt. and Charles as Boss Finisher. Their daughter Mary Alice Jowett married on July 1, 1884 in to James Grosvenor who lived next door at 95 Maple Ave.

Andover Townsman - Sept. 24, 1897 - William W. Jowett of Maple Avenue and his son John W. Jowett of High Street have purchased the plant of Wondall Bros' yarn mill in Methuen and will take charge Oct. 1. Wendall Bros. are to move to Meridith, N.H., but the business will continue under the management of John W. Jowett. William would later move to Haverhill and sold the property to William D. Currier, wife Carrie on June 22, 1915.
