Architectural Description:
One and one-half story Greek Revival farmhouse with side hall entrance and sidelights. Arched window in front gable peak. Window crowns and paneled corner boards seen on 19th century photograph have been obscured by vinyl siding. Several 19th and 20th c. additions and a large, intact shingled barn at the rear. Drystone wall borders Holt Rd. 1950s greenhouse no longer extant.
Historical Narrative:
This property was part of the extensive land holdings of the Holt family. Nicholas Holt, one of Andover's earliest settlers, acquired large tracts of land southeast of Andover Center around Holt Hill before 1675.
One-half acre of land was transferred to Samuel Blanchard Holt by his father, Joseph Holt Jr. in 1854 for $75.00. Samuel, one of six children, was identified as a house-wright in the deed. He married Caroline Lucy Abbott (member of another Andover founding family) in 1850 and produced five children. Samuel's father, Joseph, who lived in the adjacent property at 101 Holt Rd., died on July 4, 1866 when he fell from a cherry tree.
The property is identified as belonging to S.B. Holt, carpenter, in the 1885 directory and on the 1888 map.
The property transferred from Samuel Holt to Michael Feeney in 1896, and from Michael Feeney to Mary Feeney (wife of James J. Feeney) in 1901. Joseph B. Feeney sold the property to Alby & Judith Arsenault in 1944. The Arsenaults transferred the property to Herbert F. and Gertrude A. Allicon in 1953.
