Architectural Description:
Originally built as a modified Queen Anne style home with a hip roof. The mansard roof was added later.
Historical Narrative:
The land was part of the Pasho estate and sold by the heirs to James W. Hibbert who purchased several house lots along Chestnut St. in Oct. 1911. Hibbert sold lot #3 to Floyd W. Eastman on Sept. 25, 1915.
Floyd Winfred Eastman was born Sept 16, 1890 in Andover, son of Edwin Rueben & Miranda Belle (Andrews) Eastmain. His father was a Barber, who came to Andover in 1887 and had a barber shop on Park Street. They loved at 48 Chestnut St. in 1900. Floyd became a clerk for the Boston & Maine Railroad, working in the main office at 150 Causeway St. in Boston. Floyd married on June 24, 1916 in Albany, Maine to Gertrude Mae Cobb. b. Dec. 20, 1889 in Albany, ME. daughter of Cephus & Mary F. (McKeen) Cobb. The week before on June 16, Floyd took a mortgage loan from the Jacob Barnard Trust for $2500 which includes the buildings on the property. The house was built for Eastman and remained in the family for 39 years. The 1920 Andover Valuation - 83 Chestnut St., Eastman, Floyd, House $2200, land 14975 sq. ft. $700 = $2900 assessment.
Floyd and Gertrude had four children: Frederick John b. May 8, 1817-d. May 10, 1917, Elizabeth "Libby: cobb b. May 5, 1918, Frederick Cobb b. Aug. 4, 1921 and Rovena Andrews b. June 25, 1925. The family attended the Baptist Church and Floyd was a member of the Odd Fellows. Gertrude died on Nov. 25, 1941 and Floyd died on May 27, 1954. both are interred in Hillside Cemetery, East Stoneham, Maine. The Eastman house was sold by their son Frederick, the administrator of the estate on Nov. 27, 1954 to Oliver R. Surette.
