Architectural Description:
Craftsman - Bungalow - A popular design style from 1890 - 1940. Use of natural cedar shingles, gabled open porch roof facing street, shed dormer with exposed roof rafter, eave brackets, fish scale shingles define base sill from foundation. Curved shed roof over side bay window.
Historical Narrative:
This parcel lot was purchased on Dec. 11, 1891 by William H. Jowett, wife Mary from the heirs of Henry A. Bodwell. Bodwell purchased his parcel (#37) in 1883 from John H. Flint which included all the land on the east side of Maple Ave from #29 to Walnut St. The Jowett home was formerly numbered #37 and renumbered in 1928 to #77. This parcle was once a portion of the Jowett property and sold in 1915 when the Curried family purchased the home.
This parcel was sub-divided by William D. Currier, wife Carrie and sold to L. Maude & Fred G. Chenney on June 22, 1915. It was #39 Maple Ave. after construction but was renumbered in 1928 to #83 Maple Ave.
Andover Townsman - June 25, 1915 p. 1 - The batters are up for the house to be erected for F. G. Cheney, on Maple avenue. Mr Cheney is the manager of the Lawrence division of the New England Telephone & Telegraph Company.
The Andover Valuation for 1920 lists Mrs. L. Maude Cheney, 39 Maple Ave. House $3200, 17,440 sq. ft land $900 = $4100 assessment.
Fred Gilbert Cheney was born Aug. 17, 1874 in Marlborough, MA son of Henry I. & Georgianna (Ware) Cheney. Fred was an electrician when he married o June 12, 1895 in Clinton, MA to Lizzie Maude Messer b. Jan. 5, 1873 in Groton, MA, dau. of Abbott M. & Mary (Farnsworth) Messer. Fred & Maude had four children of which two survived; Paul M. b April 1896 and Harriett M. b. 1906. Fred became manager of the telephone company in Clinton then came to Lawrence, MA in the same capacity. The 1920 Census lists his father Henry I. Cheney, age 72, living with his son and working at Smith & Dove Co.
Fred died on May 25, 1946 in Boston and his wife Maude on Oct. 27, 1960. Son Paul Cheney was deeded the property on July 6, 1960. Paul, an Insurance agent, and wife Florence lived here four years then selling Timothy A. & Marilyn R. Brennan on Oct. 20, 1964. The Cheney family owned the home for 49 years.
