84 Central Street

Architectural Description: 

Queen Anne style, clapboard on first level and cedar shingle on second story with fish scale shingles in gables of roof. design elements on front porch. shutters remain on windows.

Historical Narrative: 

The property along Torr St. and Central St. was once owned by Lyman A. Belknap who transferred several parcels to his wife Carrie L. Belknap purchased sold a 3¾ acres to John Weeks on September 2, 1895 with buildings. John then took a loan from Lyman Belknap for $3700 on Sept. 23, 1895. John was a house carpenter and built his home at #84 Central Street. The loan was later transferred to the Merrimack Mutual Fire Insurance Co. in 1906 and was discharged in 1915. The 1897 Andover directory lists John Weeks off Phillips St. near Central Street.

John Weeks was born Nov. 1847 in Nova Scotia, Canada, son of John & Catherine (Buchan) Weeks. John immigrated in 1874, settled in Andover and married on Oct. 8, 1884 to Amanda Jane Horsman b. April 26, 1862 in New Brunswick Canada. John & Amanda had three children; Clarence b. Sept. 26, 1885, Mabel Adele b. Feb. 19, 1888 and Mildred Lydia b. Mar. 12, 1892.
The Weeks family owned the home for 51 years. John sold off house lots from his large parcel of land and created the right of way off Torr and Central Streets. This lot comprised lots #4, #5 and half of #6. off the Map plan #6155. John died on April 19, 1940 at age 92. Amanda died Oct. 17, 1945 and both are interred at Spring Gove Cemetery. The property was then sold by their daughter Mildred Weeks to Charles H. & Betty H. Sawyer on Apr. 22, 1946.
