95 Maple Ave (formerly #43) 38-170 – 0.411a

This parcel lot was purchased on March 31, 1885 by James Grosvenor from Henry A. Bodwell. Bodwell had purchased his large parcel (#37) in 1883 from John H. Flint which included all the land on the east side of Maple Ave from #29 to Walnut St. This home was formerly numbered #43 and renumbered in 1928 to #95 Maple Ave.

Oct. 23, 1874 Andover Advertiser - AA – John H. Flint is at work on a new avenue leading through his land from Elm Street to Carmel lane (Walnut St.).
James Grosvenor Jr. was born on Jan. 1851 at 28 Essex St, son of James & Elizabeth (Hindle) Grosvenor. His father was the ticket agent at the old Andover – Wilmington Railroad Station. After the death of his mother in 1884 James and his two sisters Elizabeth K. and Mary Hannah inherited their parent’s house. Elizabeth sold her share to her siblings and Mary Hannah and James co-owned the Essex St. property.

James purchased this land on the NE corner of Maple Ave. & Walnut Ave. on Mar. 28, 1885 and built a house for himself. AA March 20, 1885 p. 2 –“James Grosvenor will soon return to town from Malden, and build a residence on Maple Avenue.” AA April 24, 1885 p. 2 – “Brainerd Cummings will build the new house for James Grosvenor on Maple Ave.” AA May 1, 1885 p. 2 “Regan & Howard put in the foundations for the houses of Messrs. Grosvenor on Maple Avenue and Sullivan on Main Street.”

James graduated from Phillips Academy in 1872 and then Bryant and Stratton College. James married on July 1, 1884 in Andover to Mary Alice Jowett b. July 28, 1862 in Haverhill, MA dau. of William & Mary (Buckley) Jowett. William Jowett built his home next door at 77 Maple St. in 1892.
James & Mary Alice had three children; James William III b. Oct. 1, 1886, Francis Jowett b. Nov. 17, 1887 and Harriet Hindle b. Jan. 27, 1891.

Their marriage did not last and they divorced about 1897. Mary Alice remarried in 1898 to James D. Langton, a piano tuner, b. in Penn. They later lived in Jackson Missouri. The two youngest children lived with their mother while the oldest son James W. stayed with his father. The 1900 census list James age 49 and son James William age 13 living here. James sister Mary Hannah died in 1902 leaving her estate to her siblings Elizabeth & James. James bought out Elizabeth’s share and placed the Essex Street homestead in trust.
James remarried in 1906. AT Nov. 2, 1906 - James Grosvenor of this town and Mrs. Helen Hartwell of 10 Bailey Street were quietly married at the residence of Rev. Geo. E. Lovejoy 118 Bailey Street, Lawrence, on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. After the wedding trip Mr. & Mrs. Grosvenor will reside at 43 Maple Ave.

Son James William was a temporary member of Punchard High School, Class of 1908, but did not graduate. James married on Oct. 7, 1907 to Elizabeth Quin b. in Scotland, dau. of Daniel & Mary (Callahan) Quin. James became a Teamster, later establishing a trucking company in Providence, RI.
His father James sold the property to Arlon L. & Mary Polsey on May 20, 1920. He also sold the Essex St. property in 1919 and moved to Providence where he died in 1921. The Grosvenor family are interred at Christ Church Cemetery, Andover, MA.
