Built in Greek Revival period, yet has symmetry of Federal period
Historical Narrative:
Cuba Street was laid out by John Flint and Calvin C. Damon who then sold off house lots. This lot was sold to Aaron D. Mayo, wife Sally for $869 on July 21, 1830 and contained two parcels. The second parcel of 1 acre 32 sq. rods was sold to Herman Abbott Jr. for $100 on Oct. 12, 1831. The deed gives Herman Abbott's occupation as a Spinner. He would later become a carpenter and cabinet maker. Herman Jr. was born on Dec. 28, 1808, son of Herman & Lydia (Farrington) Abbott. Herman would later purchase a furniture business on Elm Square in 1854 which occupied the library lot. Herman sold the house to Michael Rowley, wife Ann, on Jan. 25, 1856 for $400.
Michael Rowley was born in Ireland in 1822 and is listed as a Flax Dresser in the 1860 census. Sarah age 35 and son Nicholas age 5, were also born in Ireland. The 1860 Valuation lists Rowley, West Parish, 1 acre Land and Buildings $425, Personal estate - Farm stock $100. They held the property four years then selling to Aaron S. Clark, wife Sarah M. on Sept. 18, 1860 for $865. The Clark family was listed in the home in the 1860 census with Rowley.
Aaron S. Clark was born Sept. 22, 1823, son of Ezekiel & Abigail Clark. Aaron married about 1847 to Sarah M. b. 1816 in NH. They had eight children: Sarah E. b. 1845 NH, Fedeila Adelaide "Fiddly Addly" b. 1848 NH, Aaron F. b. 1850, Estella M b. 1851 - d. 1866, George T. b. 1853, Mary Ella b. 1855, Justin E. b. 1857, and John E. b. 1862.The Clark family resided here from more than 35 years. Aaron died on Dec. 19, 1898.
