The property was sold by the Foster family to Deacon Albert Abbott, Andover Merchant on Oct. 1, 1855. Albert was born in Greenfield, NH on Feb. 27, 1810, son of William A. & Hannah (Bailey) Abbott. Albert married on Jan. 5, 1836 in Ashburham, MA to Abigail "Abby" Hale Cutler, b. June 8, 1816. The Abbott children all born in Andover, MA; Albert Cutler Abbot b. Dec. 18, 1839, Sarah L. b. 1840, Abba E. b. 1843, Lilla b. 1844, Lewis L. b. 1845, Arthur H. b. 1849 and Lucia W. Abbott b. 1853.

Albert Abbott was a successful merchant in town. As his children grew and left home the Abbotts rented rooms to students. They also had a domestic servant. Albert died on April 5, 1882 at 71y 1m 8d. He is interred at Spring Grove Cemetery. His wife Abby H. continued to live in the home. She died on Aug. 11, 1894. Daughter Sarah L. died in Feb. 1895. The Abbott heirs inherit the property and at the time of sale most lived out of state. Son Albert C. was in Iowa by 1860, Lewis L. in NYC, Arthur H. in Chicago, IL, Lilla in Boston, MA and Lucia Abbot Thompson in New Jersey. Arthur and Lilla are also interred at Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover, MA

The Abbott heirs sold the property to Fred M. Temple for $4250. on Aug. 21, 1901. The property contained two lots totaling about 3 acres. Fred Temple transferred the deed to his wife Flora M. Temple. A right of way was assigned to Flora by Arthur Sweeney on March 24, 1914.

Fred Milstead Temple was born Oct. 29, 1867 in Reading, MA son of William H. & Ruth Ann (Welch) Temple. Fred married in Reading on Nov. 11, 1889 to Flora M. Tripp b. Sept. 1866 in Chatham, MA daughter of Godfrey & Cynthia A. (Sparrow) Tripp. Fred was a Commercial Traveler for a paper company the later a manufacturer of high quality paper in Lawrence, MA. Fred & Flora had seven children all born in Reading, MA; Alice F. b. May 1890, Flora B. b. 1892 - d. July 12, 1893, Beatrice b. Mar. 1894, Ruth Tripp b. Apr. 30, 1896, Kirk Godfrey b. May 21, 1896, Hilda Belle b. Aug. 28, 1898, and George P. b. Aug. 21, 1900. The Temples raised the family in this home which was once numbered 228 Main St, 228 Highland then changed to #1 Highland by 1930. Fred Temple died on Jan 14, 1926.

With the Temple children now out on their own, Flora then opened the house to teachers and housemasters at Phillips Academy. In the 1930 Census Flora is 63 and she has one domestic servant, Rowna Twoomey 31 from Ireland. Seven teaches also resided in the east wing of the home. James Trahan 32 NY, Basford E. The Temples owned the property for 35 years when Flora Temple then sold to Philip K. & Elizabeth Warner Allen on April 11, 1936. This would be the Allen home for over 50 years. In May 1990 Philip and Elizabeth deeded the property to the Trustees of Phillips Academy with a life tenancy for both. The Allens would continue to pay the taxes and maintain the property during their lifetime in the home. The following year the Allens moved to Westwood, MA and releasing the property to the Trustees of PA on Dec. 31, 1991.
