This homestead was once owned by the Stevens family and inherited by Sarah Stevens in 1820. Widow Sarah Stevens sells to Stephen Abbott on Aug. 22, 1820 several parcels of the estate, the 2nd parcel listed is the 9 1/4 acre Homestead lot. Steven & Hannah own the property for 17 years. With the death of Stephen, Hannah and their children inherit.
Samuel Gray was appointed Power of Attorney of Stephen Abbott's estate on Apr. 14, 1837 His wife Martha was an heir in her own right. Samuel & Martha Gray were deeded the property on Mar. 29, 1839 and sold a year later to John T. Bailey on Apr. 1, 1840. Wyman Bailey sells the homestead to Joseph Cummings on Apr. 20, 1844 for $1230.
Joseph Cummings, Yeoman, acquired additional property to the estate. On his death his wife Phebe F. Cummings and children Charles O., Joseph P., Henry, John & Ann Randall, Elizabeth & Sidney Drinkwater inherit on May 7, 1861. Certain parcels were sold to son Henry Cummings and son Charles O. Cummings purchased the homestead from the estate on June 8, 1861 for $3200.
Charles Osgood Cummings, b. June 29, 1818 in Andover, son of Joseph & Mary (Plumber) Cummings. He was a farmer and lived at 105 Elm Street in Andover. MA. Charles first married on May 15, 1845 in Newmarket, NH, to Abby Wheeler Locke b. 1824 - d. July 13, 1886. Charles & Abby had one daughter Blanche Osgood Cummings b. June 1870. In 1870 Charles was the Overseer at the Town Alms House in Frye Village. Wife Abby was the matron. In 1889 Washington Ave. was cut through the Cummings property from Summer to Elm Streets. Charles then sub-divided his land into house lots and began selling off parcels. Charles remarried on March 22, 1892 at age 73 to Augusta Camilia Symonds [Jonas, Willard], born October 22, 1852 in Middleton, MA, daughter of Willard & Henrietta M. (Sheldon) Symonds. Augusta, a widow, was first married in Andover, MA on November 26, 1872 age 20 to Frank W. Stevens age 32, son of Timothy C. & Elvira (Abbott) Stevens. Frank b. 1840 in Montpelier, VT. was a shoemaker. Frank died and Augusta or Camilia, as she was known to her family, remarried at age 39. She did not have children by either marriage. Charles died on September 14, 1898. Widow Augusta C. heir inherited by Will on Jan. 30, 1900.
Augusta C. Cummings remarried on Dec. 24, 1900 to Andrew Thompson, the property was place in both names. Andrew age 46, was a blacksmith, son of Andrew & Mary (Stevens) Thompson.
