Historical Narrative:
This property was once owned by Samuel Needham. Needham sold the once acre 16 poles lot with building to John Flint, Cabinet maker" on Mar. 13, 1829. It is the secnd parcel mentioned in the deed. John Flint built the wooden store at 2 Main St. on the corner of Post Office Ave. about 1818. It would be later known as Valpey's Meet Marker in the 1880s.
Flint owned the property for nine years then selling to Thomas C Trow, a "Butcher" for $100 on May 17, 1838. Trow held about seven months then selling to Ivory Edwards, a Blacksmith, also for $100. Edwards owned just two years then sold to John J. Brown, a Jewler, on June 4, 1841 for $750. John J. Brown open a store at 9 Main Street in 1843 and expanded his business into an Apothecary. His store would become one of the most patronized by residents in town. Brown later sold this home to Joseph R. Millett on Jan. 1, 1848 for $1000. Brown then purchased Millett's home at 37 High Street.
Millett, a carpenter, had some financial setbacks and would sell two years later to John McGinley on Jan. 28, 1850. McGinley then turned the property the following day to Mehitable M. Hawley on Jan. 29, 1850. Hawley owned the home for ten years then selling on Mar. 28, 1860 to Edward J. & Harriet W. Wardwell.
