48-50 High Street

Historical Narrative:

This property is now part of the Temple Place Condominiums developed in 1972. Prior to that it was owned by Jacob W. Barnard who developed Temple Place in 1897. This building was here on the 1872 map of Andover and also appears on an 1852 map as one of two buildings on High St. owned by Seth Sherman.

The house and lot at 52-54 High St. was purchased on June 8, 1868 for $632 from Margaret (Shaw) Sherman by Jacob W. Barnard. Margaret Sherman was the third wife of Seth Sherman, a clock and watch maker. Margaret was born in Scotland in 1823, dau. of David & Betsy Shaw, married Seth on Dec. 11, 1857 in Andover. They had one son George W. Sherman b. 1858- d. 1937

Col. Seth Sherman was born in 1811 in Dartmouth, MA son of Abraham and Lydia Sherman. He first married Mary Rust. b. 1812 in Hamilton, MA on Apr. 22, 1832. Seth & Mary had four children; Mary P. H. b. 2/19/1833, Seth Martial b. 7/5/1834-d.3/29/1851, Henry Thatcher b. 11/25/1835, Samuel Rust b. 4/15/1842-d. 8/24/1843. Wife Mary died Sept. 21, 1843.

Seth remarried on Dec. 30, 1850 Mary Ann Poor, b. Mar. 1811 dau. of Isaac & Lydia Poor. Mary Ann Poor had purchased the home at 52 High St. from Thomas Marshall, wife Phebe on Jan. 4, 1837 for $850. A marriage contract between Mary Ann and Seth was signed on Dec. 17, 1850 stating that all Mary’s real estate was to belong to her without interference from her husband. (see b. 441 leaf 266 Salem deeds) Their marriage was sort lived as Mary A. died in Nantucket of childbirth on April 28, 1855 at age 43. Mary had willed her estate to Seth.

The Andover Valuation Schedule in 1860 lists Seth Sherman; 1/ 1/2 acre Dwelling house and land $1050, 1/2 old house and land $350. The 1852 map of Andover shows two buildings on the Sherman site. This house is most likely the newer home. The 1870 Valuation for Jacob Barnard list the New house $1500, Sherman house $1200 on 1 1/2 acre of land.

Seth placed the property in Margaret’s name in on Nov. 29, 1859. Seth died of an Apoplectic fit on Aug. 10, 1867. His wife Margaret sold the house for $632 to Jacob W. Barnard on June 8, 1868.

Barnard had previously purchased the Elizabeth Boynton parcel on Nov. 9, 1858 at 44 - 46 High St.

Jacob W. married Eliza Jane Foster and had two children; Henry Warren born Nov. 5, 1868 and Gertrude who married Francis Bergstrom. Eliza Died on May 10, 1918. Henry and wife Mable (Paradise) Barnard then moved into the mansion house. Their home at 12 High St was built in 1897directly behind his parent’s home. Henry W. became a partner in his father’s firm and J. W. Barnard & Son was established in 1894. with Henry in general charge of the company. Henry and Mable had three children, Marion Paradise b. 1895, Foster Carnes b. 1896 and William Shirley b. 1901. His two sons were also associated with the firm before establishing the real estate and insurance company. Henry W. died on November 8, 1938 and his wife Mable on May 20, 1942.

The Barnard Trust held the property on High St. and Temple Place until 1971 when they sold off these properties to L. John Davidson on Sept. 2, 1971. John was an Andover developer who rehabbed several properties on Main St, Elm and Essex Streets creating much needed retail and professional office space.

All the former apartments were rehabbed, updated and converted into the Temple Place Condominiums on Aug. 28, 1973. The site contains eight separate buildings and seventeen condo units.
