Architectural Description:
The gable pediment triangle is a Greek Revival element. The home was once cedar shingled and left natural to weather to a russet brown. A long wrap around open porch across the front facing South Main St. and along the south side on Cottage Rd. All the windows were 6 over 6 double hung windows each flanked with Paris green shutters which added to that Cape Cod weather beaten charm.

This property was once part to Justin & Mary R. Carter’s farm. Horace A. Mason purchased this 4 acre pasture on Nov. 5, 1865, (rec. May 15, 1878) for $160. Horace was born in the North Parish of Andover in 1810, son of Robert & Phebe (McIntire) Mason of North Reading. Horace was a shoemaker and never married. The 1870 Andover Valuation lists Horace Mason, South District, Shop $35, 5 acres land $125 = $160 assessment. It appears the Horace had the home built on the site.
Horace A. Mason died on Mar. 7, 1883 age 73 year 4m 7d. John B. Abbott was the Administrator of Mason’s estate. Daniel W. McIntire the estate on July 14, 1883 at auction for $410. The deed states: 5 acres “A certain lot of land with dwelling house, barn, shed near the house once of Rufus Caldwell”
Daniel purchased and additional 16 acres on Oct. 24, 1894.
Daniel W. McIntire was born Dec. 1849 in North Reading, son of William Chandler & Eliza Jane (Long) McIntire. Daniel and his father were both shoemakers (Cordwainers). Daniel married Dec. 5, 1874 to Elizabeth E. Morse b. Jan.22, 1856 in Norway, ME, dau. of Alonzo and Lydia A. (McIntire) Morse. Daniel & Elizabeth had six children; Caroline “Carrie” Ellen b. Sept. 17, 1875,Mary Elizabeth b. Apr. 8, 1877, Cora M. b. Oct. 2, 1880, Daniel Edward b. Jan. 1882, George E. b. Oct. 19, 1883 and Clarence Horton b. July 15, 1886.
The 1900 Census lists the three sons with Daniel E. as an apprentice shoemaker with his father. The census list this road as Fosters Lane. Daniel sold the two parcels of land to William P. Shattuck on Mar. 29, 1902 and moved to Kinston, MA. Daniel died Dec. 4, 1902 age 55 years
William Parker Shattuck was born in 1875 son of Fernando P. & Sarah J. (Cornstock) Shattuck. Parker, as he was known by, married on Sept. 29, 1902 to Isabelle Perkins Haskell, b. 1884 dau. of Clarence, M. & Harriet F. (Small) Haskell. Parker and Belle had two children in 1910 Fernando P. b. 1904 and Leslie P. b. 1907. Parker was a Machinits in a shop. They held the property for seven years then selling to Eleanor Fairbrother on July 16, 1909. The 1910 census has Shattuck on Foster’s Pond Rd. and Fairbrother on Main St.
Eleanor (Clemmons) Fairbrother was born Aug. 1872 dau. of Charles E. & Ella J. (Nichols) Clemmons. Eleanor was married and widowed four times. Eleanor first married on June 26, 1897 in Epping, NH to Charles Fairbrother b. Mar. 1850 in China, Maine, son of Wm. V. & Mary A. (Jackson) Fairbrother. Charles, a farmer, then Veterinarian and Real estate. They lived in Wilmington in 1900. Eleanor and Charles had four children; Charles R. b. July 1898, Lafayette b. Dec. 1899. Viola G. b. 1905 and William H. b. 1907.
Eleanor & Charles lived in the home at 1 Cottage Road. They surveyed and parceled off the lad into house lots in September 1911 by Ralph D. Hood Civil Engineer (Map #147). Three new roads were created to access the properties off Boston and County Roads. Two roads remain undeveloped "Paper Streets" today although they appear on a plan in 1966 as Jackson and Lafayette St. Charles died Feb. 19, 1912 in West Newbury, MA. Eleanor remarried Dec. 6, 1913 to Edgar Manning Earley b. Dec. 13, 1873 in Topsfield, MA, son of Charles and Mary E. (Margeson) Earley. Edgar had five children from his first marriage. Edgar died Dec. 26, 1917 in Andover. Eleanor married a third time to a man named Hamel in the 1920’s and then to Herbert Maynard in the 1930s. Eleanor owned for 29 years when she sold to Francesco & Caterina Direnzo on Feb. 9, 1938.
