13 Maple Ave – (formerly #5) 38-187 – 0.165 acre 7200 sq. ft. “Anderson Sanatorium”
This property was once owned by John H. Flint and purchased by William Goldsmith in 1874 when the new street Maple Ave was laid out by Flint. Goldsmith purchased three lots on Maple Ave to the corner of Elm St. He developed the lot and had the house built. Goldsmith lived on Elm St. and was the former Principal of Punchard High School and Andover's Postmaster.
AT Apr. 24 1891 - Brainerd Cummings has put up the batters for a new house to be erected for William G. Goldsmith on Maple Ave.
The property and house was purchased by Eliza A. Allen on Aug. 22, 1892. Eliza was the widow of Walter B. Allen, a brick mason and later Superintendent of the Alms House in Andover. Eliza worked as the Matron. Walter died in Oct. 1891. Eliza was born June 14, 1839 in Montrose, Scotland, dau. of John G. & Catherine A. (Richie) Findley. Eliza married Walter Sept. 16, 1857 in Andover. Eliza & Walter had two children, Carrie B. b. Nov. 23, 1858 and James Albert b. Sept. 30, 1869 –d. Oct. 22, 1878. Carrie married twice first Solomon H. Palmer on Aug. 17, 1880. Solomon died of Consumption on April 9, 1883 age 28. Carrie later wed Milo H. Gould on July 3, 1889 and lived on the Gould farm on Gould Rd.
Census records reveal Eliza A. Allen living on Chestnut St. in 1900 so this home may have been income rental property for her. Eliza died on April 26, 1913 at her daughter’s home. Carrie inherits the property and sells in 1920 to Florence E. Anderson and Harriet W. Hanson.
Florence E. Anderson was born in Baileyville, Washington Co., ME, dau. of Harrison Wm. & Abigail May (Lovering) Anderson. She had two sisters Minnie A. Jones and Sophia Hill Whiting. Florence moved to Lawrence, became a nurse and was self-employed. The Andover 1918 Directory list Florence at 5 Maple Ave. Nurse. Florence would convert the home into the “Anderson Sanatorium” a boarding house for elderly who needed recovery nursing care. Census list five boarders in 1930 and 1940. Florence died on July 6, 1941 and the property went to Minnie A. Jones.
