Architectural Description:
Craftsman - Four Square
Historical Narrative:
This property was once part of the two acre parcel of George R. Waterman’s property at 41-43 High St. (the brick residence of the adjoining property to the rear) Waterman worked for the Pacific Mills in Lawrence and after his death the property was inherited by his widow Lucretia. This lot was “staked out” in 1890 and sold to Annie L. Bell on Oct. 30, 1890.
Annie Laurie Bell was born on August 15, 1860 in Andover, dau. of Robert & Mary Ann (Russell) Bell. The Bells built their home at 44 Maple Ave and this lot was the north side yard. [see 44 Maple for Bell & Sawyer ownership]. Annie Bell died on December 26, 1911 and the estate was sold to Martin R. and Martha A. Sawyer on April 24, 1911. This property was originally #40 Maple Ave and re-numbered #50 in 1928.
Martin R. Sawyer worked for the Walworth Brothers, Inc in Lawrence and a master machinist. Martin would sub-divide his lot and sell this parcel to E. “Nettie” Ellis Hudson on Aug. 5, 1913. The deed carried a provision that a home could not be built until Martin could harvest the crop he had planted in his garden on this spot.
E. Nettie Hudson was the wife of Enos Ellis Hudson, an Stationary Engineer at the Tyer Rubber Co. in Andover. They lived in Lawrence prior to moving to Andover. Enos Ellis Hudson was born Decc. 23, 1867 in Yorkshire, England, son of Enos and Eliza Annn Hudson. Known as Ellis he immigrated in 1893. He married on June 26, 1897 in Lawrence to E. “Nettie Wilson b. 1870 in Brighton, Nova Scotia, dau. of Christopher & Mary Wilson. Nettie was a Cook at the time they were married. They built the home in 1913 and owned for 45 years. They became Naturalized citizens in 1917. No children are recorded from their marriage. Ellis died on Nov. 13, 1930. Nettie later took in a boarder Florence B. Wakefield, a bookkeeper, for a retail grocery store. Nettie died in November 1957 and the property was sold to Roger W. & Beatrice J. Collins on August 18, 1958.
