46 Whittier Street 39-117
Whittier Street was named after Nathaniel Whittier who lived at 10 Summer Street and much of the property along the route was part of his homestead. This street was an extension of Punchard Ave originally extending around the south and east side of the “Park” and through to Elm Street. All early deeds state Punchard Ave.
Andover Advertiser - April 24, 1858 – “The building of Punchard Avenue was let out to Auction on Monday to William Sullivan of Lawrence. Length one hundred fifty- five rods (155 rods), price $4.25 / rod. It is to be completed on the first of July.”

This property was once part of the Nathaniel Whittier estate and inherited by Whittier heirs; Ann E. Higgins, Hannah E. Whittier, William and Larry L. Dickinson. The heirs sold the parcel to Millard A. Clement on July 28, 1879 which included the land now 73 & 75 Park St. and 46 Whittier.
Millard Clement then divided the lot and sold the corner lot on Park St. & Punchard Ave. (Whittier St.) to George W. & Belle J. Foster on July 28, 1897. George & Bessie Foster then had their house built at 75 Park St. The Foster's lived in the home for 16 years then moved to 121 South Main St.

The property was sold on Jan. 1, 1894 to Gertrude C. Mason b. July 5, 1867 and Mary F. Mason b. July 7, 1869. Gertrude’s half was deeded to her step-mother Sarah A. Mason on Dec. 28, 1898. Mary deeded over her portion to Sarah on Jan. 26, 1899. Widow Sarah A. (Gould) Eaton, had one daughter Ella Ancella Eaton b. May 30, 1864. Sarah married George Mason on Nov. 17, 1870 and lived on the Mason farm at 21 Rocky Hill Rd. George and Sarah had two daughters Lizzie Gould b. Aug. 28, 1871 and Lucy Cogswell b. June 3, 1877. George F. Mason died of Epilepsy on May 5, 1892. He gave $300 dollars to each of his four daughters and Sarah the remainder of his estate. Sarah sold the farm and they moved to 75 Park St. The Masons owned for 18 years. It appears that Sarah Mason had this home built as the 1900 Valuation lists Sarah G. Mason and Mary F. Mason 75 Park St and the new house at 77 Whittier $2200, land $550.

Sarah Mason sold this property to Sarah E. Ladd, wife of Fred on April 14, 1911. Frederick Heman Ladd was born Aug. 31, 1872 in Haverhill, MA, son of John W. & Eliza Dodge (Wardwell) Ladd. His father died in 1880 and they moved to Andover. Fred graduated from Phillips Academy 1892 and Harvard Class 1895 with a degree in Journalism. Fred became a staff reporter for the Lawrence Telegram in 1896. Fred married on Oct. 19, 1899 in Westport, ME to Sarah Emma Jones b. Oct. 28, 1874 in East Boston, dau. of John B. & Martha A. (Richards) Jones. They then rented the home at 46 Whittier St. Fred & Sarah had five children: Bertha Jones b. Aug. 12, 1900, Anna Dodge b. Dec. 17, 1901 d. Dec. 19, 1901, Marion Dorothea b. July 3, 1903, John Weld b. Dec. 21, 1906 – d. June 12, 1916, and Frederick Heman Jr. b. Mar. 12, 1912.

The 1910 census includes Sarah’s father John B. Jones age 79 and Fred’s mother Eliza D. Ladd age 62 living with them. Fred worked for the Lawrence Telegram for 30 years the last 15 as Manager Editor. In 1928 he became the Assistant Editor of the Lawrence Daily Eagle and Editor of the paper in 1937. Fred was a member of the South Church, Andover Lodge 230 IOOF and the Harvard Club of Andover. He was also an avid tennis player.
Sadly Fred and Sarah were per-deceased by all their children. Sarah died from a fall in their home on March 22, 1945 and Fred died three weeks later on April 13, 1945.
