Whittier Court

Early deeds refer to Whittier Court as Cochrane Lane named after its owner James H. Cochrane, a blacksmith and farmer who lived and worked his trade at 5 Punchard Ave from 1845 until he retired in 1887. James sold his business to Anderson & Bowman who moved the blacksmith business to Park St.
James then sold off house lots on his lane from 1886 – 1890.

#2 Whittier Court was the first lot sold by James Cochrane to sisters Sarah E. Shattuck and Nancy B. (Shattuck) Brown of Everett, MA on Sept. 29, 1886. The deed states with buildings. Sarah and Nancy were the daughters of Paschal P. & Elizabeth “Betsey” (Lamphere) Shattuck of Harford, VT. They were two of ten siblings: George T. b. 1822, Alonzo P. b. 1823, Joseph A. b. 1826, Sarah E. b. Aug. 1827, Lorenzo W. b. 1829, Nancy B. b. Aug. 1830, Albert W. b. 1831, Charles H. b. 1834, Harriet b. 1835 and Nathan Harrison b. 1840 .

The 1880 census list Nancy (Shattuck) Brown in Hartford, VT, age 46 a Milliner, her sister Sarah E. age 52 works in milliner shop and Frank A Brown, son age 22 working in a D. G. Merchant.
There is no evidence the either sister ever lived at this property or at #4 Whittier Court and were most likely income properties. The Nathan H. Shattuck family lived in #4 and the 1906 map lists J. Cochrane at #2 WHillier Ct.

Nancy (Shattuck) Brown died on Aug. 9, 1903 and her ½ share went to her son Frank A. Brown of Everett. He sold his half to Aunt Julia F. Shattuck, wife of Nathan H. on Oct. 22, 1903. Sarah E. Shattuck died on July 14, 1904 in Everett, MA. Julia's health was failing and she sold this property to William E. Lombard, wife Susan on Feb. 1, 1911.
