64 Morton Street

Historical Narrative:

64 Morton St – 40-82 0.088 acre –3820 sq. ft., Circa 1914 –
Patrick A & Helen M. Sullivan House
Morton St., east of Main St. was first known as Pike Street or Pike Lane, then Green St. on 1872 maps. Pike and East Pike St. appear on earlier deeds. Morton St. originally began at School St. and ended at Main Street. Morton St. was extended to include Pike in the late 1890’s. Pike also was nick-named "Ram Cat Alley" by local old-timers. The Pike Soap Company was located near the intersection of Bartlet St. and later further east on the south side of the road. It was formerly believed some of the houses on the east end of Morton St. were built by Willard Pike for his employees. Recent research disproves this claim. Most of the modest homes were built for Irish emigrants between 1854 – 1860.

George H. French was a merchant in Andover when he purchased 10 acres 9 rods of land from Phillips Academy on Mar. 8, 1854. The parcel’s south border along Pike Street extended down into what is now the “Playstead ”and a portion of the Andover Housing Authority. French subdivided the property into house lots along the street. Each lot sold contained a caveat that the new owner had to build a fence along the property line and maintain their half. French sold a portion of his property to Rev. Varnum Lincoln for $750. Lincoln sold 3 acres to Rogers Sweeney, wife Catherine on June 17, 1857 for $442.50.

Sweeney sold one acre, Daniel Sullivan – Aug. 26, 1857 for $200. [See 68 Morton for history]
This property was once part of #68 Morton St. and owned by Daniel & Mary (Welch) Sullivan. The parcel was sub-divided in 1910 and deeded to their son Patrick A. Sullivan and his wife Helen “Ellen” (Kelley) Sullivan. Patrick was born Jan. 21, 1873 in Andover and married June 18, 1902 to Ellen (aka Helen) Kelly b. Dec. 21, 1879 in Cornamuckla, Ireland dau. of Bernard B. & Margaret (Ronan) Kelley. Ellen immigrated in 1899. Patrick worked as a Coachman for E. P. Chapin in 1904 and lived at 62 Morton St. Patrick & Ellen had seven children; Bernard Augustine b. July 8, 1903, Mary M. b. July 6, 1904, Francis Augustine b. Oct. 26, 1907, Louise Catherine b. July 11, 1908, Frederick Patrick b. Apr. 5, 1912, Rita Helen b. Dec. 25, 1916 and Alice Josephine b. Aug. 17, 1919.

In the 1910 Census they lived on Ballardvale Road and Patrick is listed as a laborer for a farmer. The 1913 Andover directory has them at #62 Morton St. and in 1916 at #64. Patrick is now a gardener but later a Teamster. In 1930 he works for Phillips Academy and an engineer. Patrick died on May 24, 1930 in Boston. The property deed was placed in Helen’s name in May 1937 and she died a month later on June 29, 1937.
Her son Francis A. Sullivan and daughters Louise C. (Sullivan) Makareich and Mary M. Sullivan inherit the estate. The Sullivan family heirs held the property for 68 years then selling to Robert S. & Danna J. Mason on Oct. 10, 1978.
