Hattie Higgins – Mary J. Ingram House

This property was once part of the Moore – Irving property next door at 45 Salem St. The house was built in late 1909 for the Erving/Irving family but the lot was not sub-divided until 1915.

This house was the home of Hattie L. Erving in the 1910 Census. Hattie was born in NY in 1861 named Harriett Louise Erving, daughter of William & Joanna A. (Chandler) Erving. Hattie was a teacher at the Holt District School at the corner of Salem St. and Gray Rd. from 1880 to 1885. Her salary was $9 a week. She later worked in the office at Phillips Academy. Hattie and her family lived next door at 45 Salem St. which had been deeded to her mother Joanna Erving and Hattie on Jan. 23, 1884, each 1/3 owners. The surname spelling changed from Erving to Irving as written in the 1915 deeds.

In April 1909 Hattie takes a $1500 mortgage from the Trustees of Phillips Academy. This new home built at #43 Salem Street in 1909-10 is where Hattie lived until she sold the properties 1915. She then move back to #45 Salem St. (See #45 Salem for Erving - Irving history)

With the sub-division of the property at 45 Salem St. and no recorded deed, the property titles had to be settled in Land Court on Dec. 31, 1914. This came after the death of her father William on Dec. 12, 1914. Certificate deeds are now issued. Hattie L. Irving (Erving) - Dec. 31, 1914 - Document #1203 - Certificate # 446 b. 2 p. 269

Mary Jane Ingram took ownership on Feb. 24, 1915. Mary J. (Hinks) Ingram was born in England in Jan. 1854, widow of James Ingram b. July 19, 1852 in Westbury, Wiltshire, England, son of George & Maria (Dew) Ingram. James came to America via NYC in June 1874. He married Mary Jane Hinks on Nov. 13, 1880 in RI. dau. of Francis Hinks. They later settled in Lawrence, MA. James was a weaver who worked up the ranks as an Agent and then Superintendent of one of the A.W.Co. Mills. They had four children: Ralph Osbourne b. May 1882 CT, Frances b. 1886 – d. 1888, George Erving b. Mar. 11, 1889 and Elbert Chapin b. Dec. 25, 1897. James died unexpectedly during a nose operation in Boston on Sept. 30, 1909.
Their son Ralph O. and wife Constance Ingram moved to Andover and bought the lot #39 Salem St. in 1911. The 1913 Directory lists them at #35 (#39) Salem St.

Mary Ingram with her sons George and Elbert moved here in 1915. The 1920 Valuation lists Mrs. May J. Ingram, South District - Salem St. House $5200, land 9400 sq. ft. $800 = $6000. The 1920 Census lists George age 31, is a wholesale salesman for a wool firm. In 1926 George and wife Endora have moved to Michigan and Elbert relocated to Pennsylvania. Mary remained in her home until her death in 1932. George & Endora Ingram are listed here in 1935-1939. The Ingram family resided in the home for 25 years.

The property was acquired by Phillips Academy in 1940 and has been used as faculty housing.
