Ella G. Hansen House

Ella G. DeYoung was born in August 1877 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, dau. of John G. and Mary (Boutelier) DeYoung. Ella married on Aug. 7, 1895, in Hyde Park, MA to Frederick Wilhelm Hansen b. Feb. 1851 in Norway, age 44 son of Frederick W & Georgianna (Clyde) Hansen. Fred listed his occupation as bookkeeper in Worcester, MA, at the American S & W Co. wire manufactures. Fred and Ella had five children: Frederick Erling b. June 3, 1896, Dorchester, Alf Clifford b. Sept. 1897, Helen Georgina b. Apr. 28, 1899, Robert Wihelm b. June 16, 1902-d. Sept. 26, 1905, and John Edmund b. Dec. 25, 1904, all in Worcester.
Frederick Sr. died on March 26, 1912, at age 61 of pneumonia at Worcester. Ella and son John moved to Andover in 1918 as Ella has purchased this land on Osgood St. on June 17, 1918. The 1920 Valuation lists 27 acres = $400. The census that year lists Ella and 15-year-old son John boarding with Mr. William T. Rae, age 47, at 35 Main St. Andover. The apartment was in the Barnard Block across the street from the Town Hall. William Rae is a driver fireman with the Andover Fire Department.

Ella had the house built on her property about 1923 as she is listed in the directory on Osgood St in 1926. William Rae is now boarding with Ella. Son John joined the Navy and was married on Dec. 26, 1930, in Portsmouth, VA to Myrtle Ross Melvin. Frederick E. Hansen married. Alf married on April 26, 1919, in CT to Hilda Anderson. Daughter Helen married Rufus Lamphier and had three children; Ruth Eleanor b. 1817, William Russell b. 1919 and Robert Melvin b. 1920 who died during WWII on Nov. 5, 1944, in Italy. S. Sargent, 746 Bomb S2 and 456 Bomb G.P. (H). He is interred at Florence American Cemetery & Memorial.
Ella placed the deed in her name and her son John on Oct. 23, 1951. The deed was then transferred back to Ella on March 6, 1954. Ella died on August 4, 1957, in Boston.

MRS. ELLA G. HANSEN The funeral of Mrs. Ella G. (DeYoung) Hansen, 80, widow of Frederick W. Hansen of Osgood St., who died Thursday night (Aug. 4th) at Osteopathic Hospital, Boston, following a long illness, took place Monday afternoon at 3:30 from the Lundgren Funeral Home. A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, she resided in Andover for 38 years. She was a member of Lawrence Chapter 78, O.E.S., White Shrine of Jerusalem and North Andover Grange 128. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Helen G. Lamphier of Malden; a son, John E. Hansen of Lawrence; a brother, Andrew DeYoung of Graham, N.C.; also, several grandchildren. Services were conducted by the Rev. Ralph A. Rosenblad, pastor of the Ballard Vale United Church. Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Lenley Henshaw, Eric Rothwell, Roland Winn and William Ashworth
The property was then inherited by her daughter Helen G. Lamphier.

Helen died on May 27, 1969, and is interred with her mother at Spring Grove Cemetery. In 1971 Grandson Robert C. Lamphier born 1948, an electrician is living in the house.
The Town of Andover took a portion of the property to widen the road and create Frontage Rd extension on June 2, 1969. The remaining 22 acres was sold by the family heirs to H. F. L. Realty Trust for $100,000 on Dec. 13, 1973. Gerald M. Lewis, James S. Herscot and Lawrence A. Ferber trustees. The property is now part of the Frontage Road Industrial Park
The house was razed shortly after but had been listed on the Andover Building Survey in 1973.
